The Ashtray off the USS Dubuque is in fine condition, as is the Brass Shackle type Ashtray. The Dubuque Ashtray has very detailed raised letters. This Amphibious Transport Dock Ship(Austin- Class) has had many interesting voyages over the years, from Vietnam through the Persian Gulf, if you Google it you can read its history. It was Commissioned on Sept 1, 1967, and Decommissioned on June 30, 2011. The approximate overall dimensions of the Dubuque Ashtray are 6" diameter X 1 3/4"H. She brought pieces back with her. I came home knowing I brought back pieces of history as well. I will be listing items from this unique woman's estate over the next couple of days. On a small corner of a large fireplace. I found a small stack of iron rings. I had no idea what they were until I got home and started researching. Awesome Antique Tower Handcuffs. The handcuffs are the rare thin wall key type. The cuffs are maker marked with patent dates and such. There is a"C.11" Stamped into metal on top of maker markings and patent dates. I purchased cuffs with some Antique Colt revolver items. The cuffs may have been stamped by a Prison or Jail possibly. The cuffs are in great condition but do not have a key. Cuffs measure 8 1/2" long and 4 1/2" wide at wrist restraint area. The cuffs date back to the great Western era. I read on line that Harry Houdini had Tower Handcuffs and leg restraints. A brief History of Tower Handcuffs: If any company can be said to have dominated the classic era of American handcuffs it would be Tower. Tower products had their roots in the 1860's, they lasted until the World War II era. In the last decades of the ... morenineteenth century the Tower product set a standard of precision, craftsmanship and security that perhaps has never been matched. Despite the round bow the Tower bottom key and single lock models could be shimmed by a determined prisoner with a proper bit of metal. To permanently solve the problem Tower introduced the Tower"Double Lock" handcuff. Patented on August 19. 1879 this handcuff has a much more sophisticated lock mechanism. The lock had two settings. In the single lock mode it acted just like the single lock model. To open the lock the key was inserted and rotated one half turn to the left, counter-clockwise. However, if the key was turned instead to the right, a full turn clockwise, then the lock was put into a double locked setting. The catch or bolt was now frozen the handcuff bow could not be opened, but it also could not be further closed. This prevented one from shimming open the cuff. Iron Forged Slave shackle (ankle rattler) Rare
These antique ankle shackles(also known as crab rattlers due to the shape) were attached to the ankles or necks of slaves who worked on plantations. These were forcefully placed on slaves by overseers to ensure that the slaves were working. There are metal balls located in the pods on each side of these manacles. As longs as the balls within the pods were moving. It ensured that field slaves were busy at work. The ankle rattle also helped overseers locate runaway slaves. The sound made by the rattle informed the overseers of the direction that a slave was running. Runaway slaves eventually began shoving mud into the lateral pockets to prevent the rattling.
