This a an vintage postal scale from 1963 when the price to mail a letter was 5 cents. The scale is functional and goes from 1 ounce to 1 pound. It was manufactured by B-T Company in Milwaukee. Wisconsin USA and is for rates effective January 1963. The scale is functional and shows a good degree of wear as well as wear off of the markings making it not clearly legible in all areas. There is some rusting in various areas, though none that is deeply pitted. There are some marker lines that were made to the right side of the chart on the front. It is an interesting piece of history and could possibly be restored. It stands 4 1/6" high and the base is 4"x2" Information from the internet on the manufacturer B-T Company. EPQ Splendid Quality This is a complete Plate Letter Set of four notes. Letter A-B-C-D. A very uniform and splendid set. A note on quality of Obsolete Bank Notes. Unlike regular US Government notes. Bank notes were not printed on the finest of cotton-bond paper or with the best of inks. They were not meant to circulate for a long period of time or circulate throughout the nation. They usually circulated on a local or state level, and probably not more then a few years at best. They were printed on whatever paper was ... moreavailable at the time. On some notes one can see some of the wood or pulp chips in the paper. In some cases, they were printed on earlier notes that were no longer in use. The technology of acid-free paper was not there yet, as seen with some of our national historical documents, and paper was much scarcer than we can today imagine. These notes had to be printed on semi-wet or moist paper, or the ink would not properly adhere. They were very labor intensive, and were printed by hand, one side at a time. They would manually ink the press, place the damp sheet in it, and run the roller over it. The sheet would be hung to dry, and the same process of wetting and printing would be repeated for the reverse. In the case where more than one color was used, the process would have to be repeated for each color. Unpurified water was used in the wetting process, thereby introducing more minerals or impurities to the paper. As a consequence, many of these notes are very difficult to locate without discoloration, color bleeding or what looks like water staining, due to the wetting process. 1941 Germany Auschwitz Concentration Camp Kapo Letter Feliks Buczynski 5
This letter is part of a correspondence from security prisoner(i.e. Most likely a member of the resistance) Feliks Buczynski, a prisoner at Auschwitz, to his father in Warsaw. This is originally part of a 27 item correspondence that I have been unable to sell as a collection. I am breaking it up for individual sale. If you are interested in the entire collection please contact me to discuss terms. This is a museum quality correspondence. What makes it so unusual is the author was most likely a kapo as the correspondence begins in October. 1940, four months after Auschwitz opened, and ends in June, 1944 shortly before its liberation. That the author survived for almost four years in a place where the average life span was six months is stunning. Note his prisoner number is 3940. 5 Fragments of a Scarce c1400-1450s handwritten vellum manuscript! Extracted from old post incunable binding! Each fragment measures roughly 2" x 1.25" 1.5" rectangular. With handwritten red and black Gothic Latin( text to both sides, in some cases just one side. Probably Italian, c1400-1450. Some soiling, as shown, with a few instances of worm damage, paper covering still remaining(mostly to backs) chipping and soiling. Extracted from a mid 1500s religious work folio printed in Venice. The item for sale is a wooden printing block letter S that is in good condition with marks and patina as per photo- this one is unusually double sided with a later cut S on one side and 3 on the other- the top of the block is stamped B so i an assuming the 3 was originally a B cut down- there is a long gone worm hole to the side which is nothing to worry about. The block is 5" tall and 7/8" thick overall. Will be posted using a cardboard box. Please bear in mind these blocks are used and do have ink stains.Wear,small nicks,chips,cracks etc commensurate with age and use- this part of a large collection i will be selling over the coming months which includes sets and singles so if there is a name or particular font style you are after please ask as i may have it and as always i will combine postage where possible- see below. From Milwaukee, WI, November 1868, to Goshen, IN, with a circular crossroads cancel. It is addressed to Miss Emma Wilson, care of James Wilson. 3. 94 from Ipswich. MA, in January 1869, to North Cornville, ME. It is addressed to Miss Hannah L. Kinsman. 4. 94.
