This is a manual direct differential hoist which means you get mechanical advantage from the difference in circumference of the top chain pulleys. The differential on this is about 15:1 and the mechanical advantage is double that so 30:1. To lift 1000 lbs you need to pull with about 33 lbs of force. To get an inch of lift.
