All rounded sides are beautifully carved. As well as is the magnificent lid of the chest. The footed base is also beautifully carved. And can be used as a serving tray and extends to almost 10 1/2" The entire chest is multi-functional and can be used for storage. Serving, decorative accent, or collector's conversation ... morepiece, etc. What makes this vintage Chest even more unique. Is that it came overseas from Japan in 1948 with the Seller on the ship, the USS Admiral Sims after WWII had ended, and has been in with the same family since that time. It was purchased in the war torn part of Tokyo known as the Ginza, which looked nothing then like the Ginza of today.as the people of Japan in 1948 were working very hard to get their lives and their country back together post WWII. Type of Wood: I have not had the wood identified as of yet. The entire weight of the chest is 4 Lbs. 2 Oz. The wood is absolutely beautiful. And is not light weight. It reminds me of Walnut, but I am not sure. Japan has many beautiful type trees, which could be used to create such a beautiful artifact. If there is a wood specialist out there who might be able to make a good guess, I would be open to research on this matter. I feel sure it is not teakwood. It is much too heavy. This same piece is listed for $249.95 on other websites. A relative of mine owned and operated a fine china and crystal shop in New York during the seventies and eighties. These pieces were display only in their store and never used. They are in perfect condition. And it would be difficult to find 30+ year-old china or ceramics in the same pristine condition. The Anemone pieces are hand-painted under glaze. Dishwasher safe and oven-safe. The Arabia of Finland Anemone pattern was designed by iconic Finnish ceramics designer. Ulla Procope in 1960. This wonderful blue and white design is timeless and looks great with most decor. The cups. Tea and coffee pots and other serving pieces in this pattern tend to be hand-signed with initials of the designer and painter.
