This ambrotype image is of a 82 year old man. Found inside beneath his image was a blue featherand a note stating. Mineature[sic] of Abraham Halton born in Amherst, N.H. May 9th of 1777. Date taken was August 17,1859. The design on the case(3" X 3.5" is a twelve-paneled oval. It is separated at spine. The pad inside is an embossed rose velvet, central flora design with leafy border. The delicate ornate brass mat and preserver are tarnished. Stamped on mat is"Cooke and Emerson's Patent Applied For/Providence R.I. I did a little research on the internet to try to return him to his ancestors but was unsuccessful. Maybe he belongs to you.

This is a nicely composed ruby ambrotype of an older lady looking directly at you. Her cheeks are lightly hand colored pink. Her gray hair is parted in the middle and she wears a hair piece. Her image is framed by an oval brass mat and preserver in the typical ornate style of 1850's. The design on case(3" X 3.5" is a flower filled urn/diamond center. The case is separated at the spine. A metal hook clasp secures the case closed. Inside is an embossed deep burgundy velvet pad with a scroll border and center diamond-shaped device.

Looking at you is a good looking chin bearded gentleman. He has longish hair covering his ears. Sticking out. He is wearing an impressive scarf tie, somewhat flamboyant. His nicely tinted cheeks and tie add to his presence. His image is framed by an oval brass mat that has a smooth surface with simple etching. The wood framed case(3" X 3.5" is separated at the hinge. It has the original clasp. There is a thistle motif pattern both on the inside embossed amber velvet pad and the outside of the case.

Full Case Ninth Plate Ambrotype Standing Boy Hand Tinted Union Gutta Percha
The boy on this glass looks to be about 10 years old. He did a very good job of standing still to have his picture taken. His hair is neatly parted and his cheeks have been tinted pink. He wears a button down shirt having a small white collar. The image is in good shape and has clarity and detail. The ambrotype is housed in a wood framed full case(3" X 2.5" that has cross motif on it. It is in excellent condition. The spine has been repaired with a piece of cloth tape. The clasp works fine. The boy's image is framed by an ornate gold mat and preserver. The inside embossed pad is burgundy. Has an arabesque form in the center with a feathery scroll border.

Parsons& Co. during the Civil War Era(1857-1867) It is made of gutta percha(latex product made from Malaysian trees) The design on the outside of the case is a woman riding sidesaddle who has dropped her riding crop with a dog nearby. Nice Ambrotype of a Young Lady in Gutta Percha Union Case, c. 1857, N.R.
Up for sale without reserve is this small ambrotype portrait of a young woman in a gutta percha union case. The interior label attributes it to: A. P. CRITCHLOW& CO. Manufacturers of Daguerreotype Cases. A.P. C. Co. Are the Original Inventors of the Composition for Union Cases. Dated: Oct. 14, 1856 and April 21, 1857. The case is beautifully embossed and still has crisp corners, the inside is lined with green felt- both in excellent condition. The preserver, glass, mat, hinges and snap are also in excellent condition. The young lady's period dress is tinted red and there is light red tinting on her cheeks. I believe it is an impedance box as it has stamped in the gutta percha top between the binding posts( 25.000 legal ohms at 72 degrees) The only thing missing is the round tipped key for making the bridge between the amount you select of the four choices, these keys should be relatively easy to find as they were pretty common on early telegraph equipment and you could use anything to make the bridge. This nice early piece has what I believe is a gutta percha top with brass metalwork and sits in an attractive walnut case with original finish. This piece is about 5 1/2 inches square by 4 inches tall to the top of the binding posts, I couldnt find a makers mark on it and did not open it up. It has the# 141 stamped on the bottom? Authentic Civil War Era Woman's Black Gutta Percha Full Mourning Belt Buckle
This is an authentic Civil War era woman's black Gutta Percha full mourning 2 piece belt buckle. It measure approximately 3¼ inches by 2¼ inches over all. This piece is full mourning as one can see from the traces of original black(Japaned) paint that are still intact on the back of this buckle. For a piece of jewelry to be full mourning it had to have no silver or gold showing. All metal had to be Japaned black. The over all design is of an Urn surrounded by Acorns and Oak leaves and like most Victorian era motifs they always carry a meaning. The Urn is an ancient Greek symbol of mourning. The body as a vessel of the soul, originating as a repository for the ashes of the dead in ancient times The acorn and oak leaves can stand for power. Authority or victory and may often be viewed as a military theme on morning items. Also ... morenote that the outer border is a broken branch design. Signifying a life cut short. The artistic elements of this belt buckle add together to convey the impression of mourning and loss. With an over tone that implies a military connection. Over all this is a Civil War era relic and very easily could have been worn by the Mother. Wife, or sweetheart of a soldier lost to the great war. It is really difficult to say, but one thing is for sure, this was worn as an object of mourning. Gutta Percha is a material derived from the sap of the South East Asian plant"Palaquium gutta" or commonly known as the Gutt-percha tree. Gutta Percha has been commonly used for jewelry and photographic image cases since the early 1850's. Gutta Percha was a very popular high tech material in the 1850's. Used as a substitute for the more expensive natural hand carved Jet stone that was one of the mainstays of the Victorian era mourning jewelry industry. Gutta Percha could be easily molded and mass produced, to create highly detailed objects and accessories, that were well suited to the fashionable mourner of the period. And the relative Vulcanite, were one of the earliest forms of plastic used by Craftsmen during the late 1800's. Antique Gutta Percha Belt Buckle, Cameos, Ca 1860
This antique carved gutta percha belt buckle is in exquisite condition. Each half of the buckle is 2 3/4 inches by 1 3/4 inches. The decoration. Cameos, flowers and swirls, are in relief. The brass buckle portions are firmly attached to the reverse. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or other problems. We believe this dates from circa 1860s and displays normal wear on the reverse. The front is in mint condition. There are no maker's marks.

Antique Mourning Link Bracelet Gutta Percha w/ Stamped Pattern Links Brass?
Hi. For sale an antique link Gutta Percha mourning bracelet. On the back of the links the part that holds the round links in place has a guilloche' pattern. There is also a guilloche pattern underneath the Gutta Percha on the front panel links. I believe the gutta percha may have melted some so the guilloche pattern is not as prominent as it should be and one of the links looks worn down or melted(see pictures. This bracelet is reversible and can be worn on either side. There is some discoloration and it could use a good cleaning but for and old antique piece it is still a very nice bracelet with a lot of history. The bracelet measures 7 1/2 inches long. Large Rare Victorian Gutta Percha 14k 3 Band Inlayed Bangle Bracelet
Absolutely beautiful and rare Victorian Gutta Percha and 14K gold band inlayed bangle. In overall great condition. Has normal wear for age. Hinge and clasp have some green on them. I am sure it can be removed. The pin in the hinge is also slightly out, making it slightly loose, but definitely wearable still in its current condition. This could easily be put back in with the right tool or jeweler. The gold bands appear to have indentations constant through out. This seems to be from making it. You cannot notice them unless right at the eye. Original catch chain is in tact but gold toned and faded. These are to fragile to be made of gold as most do not survive the years. The gold bands lay deeper than the Guttta Percha bands creating a nice effect. Measures approx. 6" inside, a bit over.5" wide on the sides but the middle is thicker ... moreas this is not a flat piece. Please see photos.

Here we have a old vintage gutta percha or hard rubber flower button. It is marked on the back N. R. Co. Goodyear Pat. May 6 1851. It is 1 inch in diameter. Obviously one knows that Mr. Goodyear was involved in experimenting and coming up with new products and materials. He was a real thinker! His invention or improvement to gutta percha and hard rubber spawned an entire new production of nearly every possible everyday item. Here is an example this button. It is fine condition with no chips or cracks or marks. The markings on the back are very visible and ledgible. The center post on back is very strong and attached. South Coast Gutta Percha Chock Double Bronze Sheave Maritime/Nautical Pulley
This is a double sheave nautical block made by South Coast. These are very hard to find. The chocks are made from Gutta Percha which would date this from the mid to late 1800s to around 1930. The block connections are what appear to us as a galvanized bronze regular shackle and a heavier bronze reverse shackle. The sheaves turn freely and would look to take a 1/2" line. The item is in very good to excellent condition with no cracking as you see sometimes on Gutta Percha. The only damage is several rope burns that are visible in the 1st and 3rd photos. The South Coast imprint is barely visible in the last photo. We did not clean this to preserve it as we found it. With the shackles extended. The pulley is approximately 10" 25.5 cm) long and it measures 2-3/4" 7 cm) across the front. The sheaves are approximately 2" 5 cm) ... morein diameter. Civil War Federal Navy Shaving Soap Box Dish Gutta Percha Naval
This is an authentic Civil War Federal Navy Soap Box/Shaving Dish. Marked on the top U.S.N. with anchor and"Don't Give Up The Ship" Made from Gutta Percha. An early type of rubber. Typically these were made by Goodyear or licensed to The Novelty Rubber Company. The markings for this dish are on the inside rim. But I can't make it out- this dish has still has a fair bit of soap residue on it. Particularly on the top- I very much like to leave things as they are. Knowing that this is how it looked when it was last used- if you are the type that wants it"clean" It comes off easily with water(I did swab the inner rim just so I knew that the maker writing was there) The mirror glass is fully intact. Though much of the mirrored surface has degraded away. It also has the hanging ring. The underside of the bottom piece ... morealso has a name on it, though it is very, very faint- J.es or Johnsen Castor or Caston, Gaston? also some writing near the center, again very very faint. There are a few small chips on the top rim where it meets the bottom piece. Please see photos. Measures 3 inches in diameter. Full Case Ninth Plate Ambrotype ID'd Peter Cragie Union Gutta Percha
Inside this case a small slip of paper was found having the name Peter Cragie on it. A quick search on the internet shows a Peter Cragie being a Civil War Soldier from New Hampshire as part of the 3rd New Hampshire Infantry. He was also listed in the 1870 Grafton County NH census. The full case designed with a cross motif measures 2.5 by 3 inches. The case is in good shape but shows some wear. It is attached at the spine and the hook and latch work. The backside is broken with some small chips on the broken edges but it pushes together pretty tight and has not been glued in the past. The gutta percha frame has a few cracks. All four corners has little pieces chipped off and the little girl in the rocker looks like she is holding a doll. the smaller tintype has a big cloudy area around the neck. RARE!! Original Remington 44-40 Model 1890 Gutta Percha Grips w/screw NICE!
These are beautiful grips and came out of a old collection that was sold last summer of a man who collected guns all his life and had quite a pile by age 88! I have showed these grips to several collectors and all agree that they are original grips for a 1890 Rem. When scratched on the back with a screw driver they show a white scratch and I am told that is a sign of vintage Gutta Percha grips and not modern made material. The image is in good condition but the lower gilt frame has a bend. The case is decorated on both the front and back with an American eagle holding a flag. Above the eagle is a banner with the motto"UNION FOREVER" When we removed the image to look for a mark we discovered a small oval tintype and a scrap of paper which we have left behind the image. Lyre Motif Old Full Case 1/6th Ambrotype Man Glasses Purple Union Gutta Percha
This ambrotype is heavy and comes with two pieces of glass and an early gold brass mat having a pebble finish. The unusual shape mat was produced during the late 1840s. It does not have a preserver. Preservers were not in general use before 1847. This distinguished gentleman has very long sideburns. Wispy hair and wears spectacles. His image on glass is housed in a black worn leather case(see scan) that measures 3 x 3.5 inches. As seen in the scan the case is old. It has a lyre motif. The same design found on cases signed by Matthew Brady. This case is not signed; however, Brady is known to have made cases that he sold to other photographers, this may be one of them. It is attached at the spine and the single swivel latch is intact and in good condition. Inside is an unembossed purple silk pad.
