Antique Victorian Gutta Percha Mourning Locket and Long Link Necklace. The locket has lovely carved flowers on the front and opens to show a carved design on both sides. There is a little piece missing from the locket hinge on the back(see photo) Very period chunky link necklace which I believe was made for the locket and is a original set. The locket measures 1 1/2"long x 1 3/8" wide and the necklace measures 15 3/4" each side when laid straight from the clasp to the top of the locket and each link measures 3/4" long x 1/2" wide. This is a lovely case with a vase full of flowers on both sides. It has external hinges and measures 3 1/8" x 2 5/5" It is in wonderful condition except for one unfortunate chip on the lower front cover. It closes with a snap and had no cracks or other chips. Up for auction is a set of 2 tintypes of Richard J. Wilson. The first is a 1/6 plate tintype with a 3/4 length picture. This tintype was made when RJ Wilson was a Sergeant for the 23rd NJ Volunteers. It is in a stunning and ornate gutta percha case with high relief designs. The case is in perfect working order and is nearly immaculate. There is a small discoloration spot on the front. Near the spine, and a crack on the front and top. The 4th picture shows this crack. The crack does not appear to affect the integrity of the frame. The second tintype is a small"gem" tintype in a stiff paper"frame" This picture is also of RJ Wilson. But it is from a couple of years later, when he had been promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. Victorian Black Gutta Percha Hand Mirror
Very nice black Victorian hand mirror with beautiful flower design. I believe this is made of gutta-percha. It measures 9” long and 3 1/4' wide. It has the patent date of June 19. 1868. The beveled mirror is in good condition with some discoloration around the edges and two small lines of black under the mirror near the top. The mirror itself has just a couple signs of wear. Since this is a bakelite type of material there are three small areas that looked melted. At the base of the mirror there is a short gouge. It comes in a reddish brown gutta percha case in very good condition for its age. There is a small crack near one of the hinges. The latch is a little loose but it opens and closes fine. The glass is clean and the brass framing is in very good condition. There is a corner of the outer frame missing(See pic- lower left corner) Measures 3" by 3- 1/2" and is 3/4" thick. Made Circa 1850 This Important Historical Gutta Percha was the early forerunner of bakelite. Gutta-percha( Palaquium) is a genus of tropical trees native to Southeast Asia. From Taiwan south to the Maylay Peninsula and east to the Solomon Islands. The same term is used to refer to an inelastic natural latex produced from the sap of these trees, particularly from the species Palaquium gutta. In the mid-19th century. 19th Century Gutta Percha Match Safe German silver inlay with striker surface on sole of shoe. Excellent condition(slight wear on underside of lid. Heel has some abrasion and four“nail heads” are missing) Dimensions: 3.25” long, 1” wide, 1.25” high. Smokers of the late 1800s carried matches in small match safes of wood. Silver, brass, pewter and as in this piece, gutta-percha. Common to this time were snuff boxes of similar size and design. Here in this pocket size match safe a sense of humor is found—a stratch surface on the bottom of the little shoe that recalls striking matches on the bottom of one’s shoe to light a cigar. Gutta-percha latex properties were discover in 1842 and were in use by mid century for electrical insulating material. Double Daguerreotype of Two Beautiful Ladies in a Gutta Percha Case-ANSON
These are two excellent vintage daguerreotypes in what I think is a gutta percha case. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Both of these are true dags. and look just like mirrors from the right angle. They could be mother/daughter or maybe two sisters. The one on the left has a spot of corrosion on the bottom. However it doesn't interfere with the beauty of the photo. There are also some spots of corrosion on the mats of both pictures. The mat on the left photo is stamped ANSON at the bottom left. The condition of the case is very good for it's age. There are three small chips in the case, all seen in the photos. The 2 halves put together measures just over 2 1/2 in. by 2 in. This buckle is from the Civil War area. The buckle is in excellent condition. Antique BLACK WATCH FOB - Gutta Percha?
