The item on offer is a Zeiss medical military portable field microscope; the serial number is 242698. Likely manufactured in the 1930's. The optical components consist of a 10 X ocular, three Zeiss objectives: 8X NA 0.20, 40X NA 0.65 and HI 90X NA 1.25, and a Zeiss Abbe condenser. The condenser is on a rack and pinion mount; its iris diaphragm works smoothly. The instrument has a graduated draw tube with which to set the tube length. The microscope is fitted with a mechanical stage. The three leg microscope frame folds to fit a compact case, but the case for this microscope is missing. The fine and coarse focus motions are smooth, as are the mechanical stage motions. Examination of the objectives with a hand lens reveals no obvious defects. The prime feature of the Zeiss Ikontas(in all versions and film sizes) is their ability to fold up flat into a very small package- making Ikontas the highpoint of small camera. Large negative. No modern camera boasts such a large negative for its size. Of course the bane of all folders existence was lack of rigidity and keeping the lens parallel with the film. Zeiss skilled engineers turned these problems into Ikonta strong points, elevating Ikontas to be generally considered the best folders ever made. Zeiss Super Ikonta B's are 6x6cm(2 1/4 x 2 1/4) format. Made from the early 1930's to the middle 50's. The various versions can be confusing. Using the 80/2.8 Tessar, the best Tessar was the post war coated version. The best shutter is the post war Synchro Compur.
