Horse brasses were used to adorn the harness horses. Primarily in the UK, many would identify the route, simply for decoration, royalty, different industries such as train or brewery and some, I am sure, were just made out of fondness for a likeness or animal. Some older brasses were worn on harness, others were just made primarily to commemorate a certain event. It is hard to date many of the harness brasses, yet you can get an idea from the patina as well as how well the brass is cast. You can sometimes tell from the darkness on the reverse, from the brass slapping against the leather of the harness, but some people clean their brasses often, so this is not always a tell tale sign. Stamped brasses are from the early 1900's and only up to the 1930's. Most brasses you come across were cast and often the getts(the holder for the casting) ... moreis left partly on the back of the brass. I find horse brasses lovely and intriguing. All of the brasses I offer for sale are from England. Here is a vintage OLIVER TWIST Horse Harness Brass from England. This is one of the Dicken's series characters. First through 5th magnitude stars of the constellations are colored yellow and shown in graduated size according to brightness. With star clusters and nebulae also indicated. This is a handmade cowboy saddle made by Bill Oliver from Amarillo. Texas and was probably built in the early 1970’s. The saddle is maker marked on the latigo carriers. Rear housing, and on the back of the cantle. Oliver's makes quality leather goods and has been in business since 1917. The saddle is numbered 468 and 1404 The saddle is made of heavy skirting leather rough side out and is built on a rawhide covered wood tree. The tree is sound. The seat finished out measures 14 ½” The saddle has been cleaned and conditioned. It has a new real sheep skin lining. New rough out chap leather hard seat, new strings, and new stirrup treads. The work was professionally done by a saddle maker. The saddle does not come with a front cinch. Add your cinch and it will be ready to ride. This would be a good all round saddle for ranch work. Uncommon pamphlet issued by the“Lincoln Historical Fund Campaign” LaSalle St. Chicago; titled and captioned on front cover“ How You Can Help Save the Great Lincoln Historical Collection/ It belongs to the Nation/ Its home is in Illinois” 8 pages. 4 x 9 inches, stapled as made. This represents an attempt to prevent the dispersal at auction of what is still considered the greatest private collection of Lincolniana ever assembled: that gathered by Chicago lawyer Oliver R. Barrett. Who died in March 1950. His collection was so extensive that it was said a decent Lincoln biography could have been composed using it alone. Prize-winning Lincoln biographer and poet Carl Sandburg even devoted a book to the man and his passion: Lincoln Collector. The Story of Oliver R. Barrett’s Great Private Collection(1949) This pamphlet features a two-page center ... morespread with some halftone photos.
