PLEASE SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR INTERESTING BOOKS& EPHEMERA* I WILL COMBINE SHIPPING COSTS FOR ALL MULTIPLE PURCHASES* Please check before making ... morepayment) General Information Old Steam Locomotive Negative HR 100(approx) 105mm x 60mm This negative comes from a large collection of black& white negatives of mixed sizes- please see above for approximate measurements. This negative comes from a batch that were taken around the UK seemingly from the 1930s to. In one case at least, the 1980s. The mixed sizes and makes of film lead me to believe that this is a collection which has been put together over a period of time from different sources rather than one which has been put together by one photographer. There are no indications as to the identity of any of the photographers involved. I have assumed that the location and date written on the envelope matches up to where and when the actual image was taken, but there is no guarantee that this is the case. I have scanned each of the negatives at a low resolution so the sharpness and clarity of the image may improve if professionally produced. Please note that postage and packing for UK addresses will be a flat fee of 95p for any number of negatives. Locomotive number: 100 Locomotive Name: GLENBRUAR Location written on envelope: No location Date: No date Other details written on envelope: BUILT 1892 General Condition: This negative is generally clean. But may have the odd speck or two of dust, or light fingermarks etc. Any photographic faults or flaws will show on the scan. Several light surface scratches. I will be glad to answer any questions and provide further information or photos- please email me All single negatives are carefully packed in stiffened envelopes. And to UK addresses are sent by Royal Mail(2nd Class Large Letter) unless otherwise requested by the successful bidder. All items shipped overseas will go by Airmail(Small Packet rate) FLAT FEE FOR POSTAGE WITHIN UK OF 95p FOR ANY NUMBER OF NEGATIVES* Please wait for invoice

Not used. It is a facsimile reproduction, NOT an original. The accompanying pictures have been scanned from a reprint, not the original. These are the operating instructions from the factory that came with every new Case steam traction engine. Which many threshermen and live steamers swear to be the best instructions available. Of course, it’s specific to Case traction engines, but there is a lot of material here pertinent to operating any traction engine– or steam engine, for that matter. An added bonus is the complete list of the serial numbers on Case steam engines. Starting with numbers 1 to 75 in 1876, and ending with 35707 to 35838 in 1924. Young Engineer’s Guide. By J.V. Roman, originally published by J.I. Case Co. Racine, Wisc, 1895. Reprinted by Engines and Engineers in 2007. 5½ x ... more8½. 108 pages. Please note that this book is new. Not used. It is a reproduction. Not an original. The accompanying images were scanned from a reprint. Not the original. From the PREFACE: Some two years ago the author commenced collecting memoranda of mechanical and practical information pertaining to the care and operation of steam engines and boilers. With a view of forming a systematic digest. Being an employee of the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co. for a number of years. My attention was called to the constant inquiry for a book of this description from young men mechanically inclined and those running farm engines and small steam plants. By repeated assurance that there was great need for such a work. And by ready and valuable assistance from personal friends and experts in mechanical engineering, I have considered it advisable to publish a practical guide for young engineers. The aim has been to place the information contained in the book in the most simple and compact form. And while it is not intended for the education of the more advanced engineers, the instructions given will be found practical in the operation of steam plants of any size. It is more especially intended for the instruction and guidance of young men learning to run engines, and those operating farm engines and small plants, whose experience has been limited. After carefully considering the mode of presentation. It was thought best to adopt the form of a catechism, with the questions and answers so set forth as to resemble an ordinary conversation; also to illustrate and give it minute description of the construction and function of the different parts used in the building of engines and boilers. While the greater part of the information is new. Parts have been compiled from Power, Roper and other mechanical papers and books, simplified to meet the required aim, for which due acknowled

Old 1920's JI Case Pocket Ledger Hit Miss Gas Engine Steam Crossmotor Tractor
This is a really neat original Machinery Operators Account Book from the JI Case Threshing Machine Company. It measures about 4 x 6 1/4 inches and has about 30 pages. American STEAM ENGINE Builders 1800-1900, illustrated
American Steam Engine Builders 1800-1900. By Kenneth L. Cope, published by Astragal Press, Mendham, NJ, 2006, 8½ x 11 paperbound, 280 pages, ISBN 1-931626-22-7. Please note this book is new. Not used. Ken Cope did ground-breaking work. Compiling comprehensive lists of American manufacturers of machinists tools, carriage making machinery, cooperage machinery lathes, and planers, shapers, and slotters, wand this-the first book to identify American steam engine builders operating throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Written in the style of the author's previous books, this volume provides the reader with invaluable information on over 300 steam engine builders- many of whom have previously gone unrecognized by researchers- including America’s first engineer, Oliver Evans, and the firms that carried on his legacy(see entries ... morebelow) Factories filled with the machinery described in the previous works. From the smallest drill presses to giant planers, could not have existed without a reliable and sufficient power source, which could not be provided by water or wind. The steam engine was that source, from the start of the industrial revolution to the general availability of electric power distributed from large, central generating stations in the early 20th century. Smaller size engines, made for farms and small industries such as cheese factories, greatly reduced the manpower required and therefore the cost of the final product to the consumer. The nearly 1000 illustrations show the development of the steam engine from1800 to 1900 in a great variety of sizes. Styles, and designs. Many designs shown proved impractical and were soon discarded; other designs such as the Corliss engine were made by scores of firms for scores of years. Along with the illustrations is a brief history of the individual maker, chronicling the various engines that each made. Following is a partial list of the over 300 builders included: Albertson& Douglass Machine Co. New London, Conn. Allis Co. E.P. Milwaukee, Wisc. Americ

In writing a book for young engineers, is likely to forget that the novice is unfamiliar with many terms which are like daily bread to him. The present writers have tried to avoid that pitfall, and to define each term as it naturally needs definition. Moreover. Ther description of parts and the definitions of terms have preceded an suggestions on operation, the authors believing that the young engineer should become thoroughly familiar with his engine and its manner of working, before he is told what is best to do and not to do. If he is forced n too fast he is likely to get mixed. The test questions at the end of Chapter III. will show how perfectly the preceding pages have been mastered. Antique Orig Nichols and Shepard Steam Engine Red River Special Thresher Manual
Hello. This auction is for an antique Operating Manual for a Nichols and Shepard Red River Special Separator and Attachments. I do not see a date on it. Something chewed up the bottom right corner of the book. Other than that damage, it looks to be in very good condition for the age. It would still display well, the pages are clear and easy to read. It is missing a couple words on the corner of each page, but still readable. It would be a nice addition to any Steam Traction Engine, Book, or Antique Farm Equipment collection. Please feel free to ask any questions before bidding. Thanks for looking!

It is a photoduplicated reprint, NOT an original. The cost of this reproduction is so high because a number of plates are larger than 11 x 17. Everything is depicted; including frame assembly, main bearing assembly, engine control stand assembly, cylinder assemblies, tachometer drive assembly and reverse engine assembly. Please note these are NOT plans for actually building the engine. These are the plans that were probably kept on the vessel as a reference in the engine room. They provide dimensions for most. NOT ALL parts and components. Since I have never seen the actual builder’s plans or blueprints, I cannot really tell what specific details are missing. Audels 1922 - How to Run a Corliss Steam Engine - reprint
How to Run a Corliss Engine. By Frank D. Graham, reprinted by Nation Builder Books, Mebane NC, 2010, 5¼ x 7¾ paperback booklet, 34 pages. This is a new photoduplication of Chapter 15. How to Run a Corliss Engine, from the 1922 edition of the Audels Engineers and Mechanics Guide No. 2. As is usual with all Audel's material from the first quarter of the twentieth century. This chapter is richly illustrated, with 37 excellent drawings and photographs of various Corliss steam engine components. George Henry Corliss patented his design for variable valve timing using rotary valves in 1849. For the next half century and then some. Steam engines fitted with Corliss valve gear offered the best thermal efficiency. Corliss engines were generally about 30 percent more fuel efficient than conventional steam engines with fixed cutoff. Even ... morethough the original Corliss patents were circumvented by other designs, steam engines with variable valve timing were known as“Corlinss engines” even after the Corliss patents had expired. The Corliss design remained the most efficient until Skinner brought the development of the uniflow steam engine to its peak in the 1930s. We also offer for sale a reproduction of Erecting and Maintenance Instructions for a 1940 Skinner“Universal Uniflow” Engines: 500 to 1200 Horsepower. In 1876. One of the major attractions at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia was a massive specially-built rotative beam Corliss engine, built and erected by The Corliss Company. At the time, it was the largest steam engine in the world, with two side-by-side cylinders bored to 44 inches(1.1 m) with a stroke of 10 feet(3.0 m) The Centennial Corliss Engine stood 45 feet(14 m) tall, had a flywheel 30 feet(9.1 m) in diameter, and produced 1,400 hp. After the fair it was disassembled and shipped back to the Corliss manufacturing facility in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1883, the Centennial Corliss Engine was sold to the Pullman Co. which had the behemoth shipped to Chicago, where it was installed in a

1980s Get Steamed poster – Bikini Girls pose with Steam Traction Engine
1980s Get Steamed poster. Photo by John Von Hagel, Fotosoft Inc. Models: Amy Grace, Kelly Stone, Cindy Smith, Sherri Bees, Elaine Geppiu. Steam engineer Gilbert Wisner. Approximately 3 feet by 2 feet(note 12-inch ruler at bottom of poster in the main photo) These are NEW old stock. Not previously owned. I thought I had sold all these off about six years ago. But I just found that I had stashed twenty of these posters, rolled up, on top of some pipes in the rafters. I opened them, and there are no bugs, no mold, no dirt, so staining– just clear, crisp, brand new posters! The one problem with them, of course, is that they have been rolled up for six or more years, maybe as many as ten years, so they are not going to lay flat, and you are likely to crinkle the poster if you try to roll it in the reverse direction to make it lay flat. I acquired ... morethese from the late Mr. Herb Schroeder. Of Biglerville, Penn. Herb was a feature at a number of antique engine and tractor shows in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He sold tee shirts emblazoned with tractor themes, and tractor manuals he photocopied himself. And I don’t remember the entire story Herb told me, but he was involved to some extent in getting this poster done. I think it was a group effort, with a number of people associated with the Maryland Historical Steam Association in Arcadia. I might not have all the details correct, but this is what I remember. Around 2003, I struck a deal with Herb, to resell his copied tractor manuals. After a few years of doing business together, as I was at Herb’s house picking up an order, he showed me these posters and wanted to know if I would take same and see if they sold. As I recall, I was setting up at the Rough& Tumble Thresherman’s Reunion later that day. Well, Rough& Tumble features steam engines, and this poster features a steam engine(among other things) so I took a bunch. I think I ended up buying nearly one hundred posters from Herb that summer. So. There are other copies of this poster out there. But these are the l

The original had a retail price of $200 on it. There is no date I could find anywhere in the catalog. But Emerson-Brantingham bought Reeves in 1912, and the artwork on the cover is typical of Art Noveau, so I would date it in the 1920s. Reeves began building threshers in 1874 and incorporated in 1888. In 1884. Reeves acquired Ritchie& Dyer Co. ... morebuilder of steam traction engines. Reeves were especially adopted for service in the colder climate of Canada, with a full jacket on the boiler and dome helping to retain heat. The Reeves plant was closed by Emerson-Brantingham in 1925, but a few years later, a local banker seeking to preserve the skilled labor force of Columbus, Ind. financed a group of men to reopen the plant and re-work Sears Roebuck gas engines, and enterprise that eventually became The Cummins Engine Co. The Catalog we have reproduced includes elven profile photos or drawings of Reeves traction engines. Including a massive 40 H.P. Cross Compound Traction Engine. In addition there is a cut-away view of a Reeves double cylinder engine; a view of the Reeves reverse and expansion gear; a Special Straw Burner Boiler; the Reeves Friction Power Guide; Reeves Compound Separators; Reeves Wind Stacker; Band Cutter and Feeder; Hart-Brown Feeder Wing Carrier; Reeves Big 18 Clover Huller; Cylinder Corn Sheller; Steel Baling Press; Flexible-Frame Hand-Lift Gang Plpw; and a Number Three Saw Mill. Traction Engine Troubles. Originally published in 1909 by the Question and Answer Department of the American Thresherman magazine. And reprinted in 1978 by The Iron-Men Album. 5½ x 8½ softcover. 79 pages. Reprinted in 2004 by Nation Builder Books, Leesburg, VA. Please note this is a new. Photoduplicated reproduction, not an original. From the Foreword: Two years ago it was determined to start a question and answer department in The American Thresherman. Notice was served to our subscribers to that effect and the questions began t0 come in immediately. They have been coming in ever since from practical threshermen all over the country-questions'in regard to their daily work that they asked honestly because they wanted help. They have come to us from young men just starting out. From old men who have practically spent their lives ... morein the business, from representatives of the great thresher houses, and, in fact, from all classes of people who are in any way interested in the great grain trade of the country. Not only have all these different classes of people been represented. But all sections of the country as well. There is not a grain growing state in the Union or a considerable section of any such state that is not represented in these pages. We have answered these questions as best we could in The American Thresherman each month as they came in. Once or twice we made a slip and then how the letters poured in from the boys in the field! This has been peculiarly their own department and they have watched it jealously, and whenever they saw anything to criticize they never hesitated to do so. All of these criticisms have been taken advantage of in compiling the questions and answers in book form. The subject matter has been arranged under headings. Catalog is 9 1/8" x 6 1/2" Landscape format. Great shape. very little wear on the cover. No missing pages, folded, or marked pages. There are small tears on pages 33-40. The largest of which is about 1 inch long. It might be a flaw in printing. As page 37 has a piece of paper attached to the rip, but no corresponding rip on the opposite page. Lettering on the front cover is embossed Great prints of all sorts of steam equipment. First page is for a single cylinder horizontal mill engine from 25 to 150 horsepower(9 x 12 cylinder up to 18 x 27) Other equipment listed in the catalog are boilers. Portable steam engines(like a tractor, but not self ... morepropelled) boiler and engine"sets" for factory installation, vertical engines from 2 to 50 horsepower(3 x 4 cylinder up to 14 x 14) and vertical boilers. Interesting note is that each engine has a series of code names for each size available. Often with themes for the particular engine. For example. The 25 horsepower"Class D" horizontal engine is named"Gull" while the 70 horsepower is"Swan" with the sizes in-between all named after birds. It is from 1900 and is a manual of instructions to operate their steam engines both traction and portable, threshers, clover hullers, saw mills, and horsepowers. It is heavily illustrated and very detailed in the used of these machines. It's in good condition for being 115 years old with some wear and soiling as can be seen. It has the top right corner of the cover and first few pages missing. It measures about 5 3/4 x 9 inches with 38 pages plus the covers. It would be a fine addition to your early Geiser literature collection or display.
