Crompton 846/93 3 DC Tachometer Tacho Generator - Free P&P
The above picture shows the rear plate where the model and serial numbers are located. The next picture shows the location of the terminals which is accessed by removing the back plate. You can see the three wires and 6 diodes of the alternator type generator system. This last picture shows the mounting flange. This listing is for a working DC tachometer model number 846/93 3 made by Crompton. I do not know the volts per rev but there is this Crompton Document that details the 846/93 type of tacho so you should be able to work out the volts. SOME TECHNICAL INFO ABOUT THIS TACHO TYPE: Normally a DC tacho is basically a permag motor back driven i.e. has brushes etc and if you rotate it one way you get a DC voltage out and if you rotate it the other way you get a reversed polarity voltage out the same terminals. This particular type of tacho ... morethat I am auctioning here doesn't have brushes it uses the alternator principle. The upshot of this is that no matter which direction you rotate the shaft. The positive terminal is always positive and the negative terminal is always negative. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR and means you can't use it with a 4 quadrant DC drive. I.e. a reversible drive. Why? Well because in one of the directions the tacho feedback voltage will be the correct polarity and your feedback loop will be controlled. In the other direction the drive will be expecting the tacho voltage to change polarity but with this type of tacho is doesn't. This will cause your 4 quadrant DC drive to go bat crap crazy and run away full speed& power indefinitely until your motor burns out. Basically. If your application requires speed control in one direction only then this tacho IS suitable, if however you require speed control in two directions then do not buy this type of tacho, its as simple as that!
