c1919 France Reims Cathedral in Scaffolding Hotel to Right Photo Lantern Slide
This is a photographic glass magic lantern slide. Black and white, labeled, West from(sic should be"front" of the superb old cathedral, a marvel of Gothic art, Rheims. Notre-Dame de Reims(Our Lady of Reims) is the seat of the Archdiocese of Reims, where the kings of France were crowned. The cathedral replaced an older church, destroyed by fire in 1211, that was built on the site of the basilica where Clovis was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims, in AD 496. Reims cathedral was virtually destroyed during World War I by German shelling and a fire, intentionally set, also by the Germans. Carefully restored(work shown here) partly as a sign of resilience. The new stained glass windows, especially the Chagalls, are a shining monument to recovery.The Keystone View company was started in Meadville, Pennsylvania by B.L. Singley, who ... morepreviously was a salesman for Underwood& Underwood. In 1898 Keystone began making and selling stereoscopes. In 1905 Keystone View Company began its Educational Department, selling views and glass lantern slides(the forerunner of the photo transparency, later used in slide projectors) to schools throughout the country. They also produced lantern slide projection equipment. Although this slide was produced by Keystone, it is not part of the Keystone 600 series but is part of the"Geography" series. Lantern slides are one of the best untapped sources of antique photographs there are. Slides were usually discarded after a relatively short period of use so are difficult to find. Slide is 3 1/4" x 4" is in very good condition, and can be viewed by projecting, holding it to the light, or placing it on a light box. This slide can be made into a photograph or poster. This is for ONE of the LADDER JACK you see here. EACH IS IDENTICAL IN CONDITION TO THE OTHER. I am assuming that they are relatively old. And I believe that they are complete and usable. I am not a builder, so I am not sure how these are used. Heavy steel. Not sure if cast iron or not. Overall length of the bottom jack you see in photo#5 is 30" Adjustable. 12 notches in the arm.
