1947 Hallicrafters S-38B AM/ Shortwave vintage tube ham radio receiver 38 B
This auction is for Hallicrafters S-38 B tube radio as pictured. This model was made from 1947 to 1953. It works on all bands. Recapped: all paper and wax capapcitors replaced. Power supply electrolytic capacitors and resistors replaced. Many other resistors replaced even if they were within range. I replaced some of them if I didn't like the way they looked. Tubes are used but tested strong. Hooked up signal generator and did alignment after recapping. Replaced the old line cord with a new heavy duty polarized line cord so the hot end of the line goes to the off/on switch. Which makes the radio a little safer. So this radio as you can see is very clean. It worked before I recapped it but 60 year old parts tend to leak and go out of range so I took the time to go through this radio so who ever ends up with it should get many years of ... morelistening pleasure. It comes with the factory built in speaker, in good shape. Dial lights up. No dents or cracks. No missing parts. Has all the correct original knobs with the metal inserts. A sweet radio. Will need an external antenna. I had best results by not connecting the jumper between A-2 and Ground. The jumper is there if you want to use it. I just hooked a single long wire to A1 seems to work fine this way. Loud volume on local stations. As with all AM radios static between stations. But static goes away on a good station. Reception works on all bands shortwave needs a longer antenna and is dependent on weather conditions and time of day and of course who is transmitting at a given time.
