Well here I am 346 miles north of San Francisco in the mountains and such mountains as you never set eyes on. it takes 2 1/2 days to get here being ... more86 miles by stage which 1 1/2 days. it is pretty lonely up here, as this country is sparsely settled. we are building a ditch about 6 miles in length and there is several places where we have to build flumes and takeing the several sections would make about a half mile of fluming. In coming here I stopped to see the La Grange Hydraulic Mines at work. they were operating three giants- they have a grand bank about 400 feet high and their out put is some 30000 a month. I have just come in from prospecting. the house I am staying in is right on the banks of Big Creek and as soon as it gets a little warmer we can catch any quantity of Brook Trout.
