These two musket balls were recovered from the sunken ruins of a tavern that sank with its companion-like buildings and brothels in the devastating earthquake accompanied by three tidal waves that caused at least 1/3 rd of what was called“Sin City” Port Royal. 19th Century 1 Litre Stoneware Tavern Mug Tankard, Pewter Lid, ID'd
This is an antique 19th century 1 litre stoneware tavern mug tankard with a pewter lid. It is 8 1/2" high to top of knob on lid or about 7 1/4" high to top of lid. Bottom diameter about 4" The mug is marked 1 L near top. The bottom has the maker's mark(see picture) I can't make it all out and don't know for sure where this piece was made. The top had the original owner's initials engraved in fancy script. It looks like it could be T Y but it might be an F or even a P. I am not certain. During the course of time. Someone else also marked the top with their initials. Anyway, the top has these scratches as pictures show. There are chips in the stoneware around bottom edge. The handle is in good shape. This plate was designed exclusively as the restaurant ware for Fred Harvey's Toy Town Tavern at the 1933 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago. Toy Town Tavern existed only during the 1933-34 run of the World's Fair in Chicago. Fred Harvey was known for developing a chain of restaurants and hotels along the Santa Fe passenger Railroad. Harvey also operated dining car service for the Santa Fe and other railways including the Atchison. Topeka and Santa Fe. Any piece of Toy Town Tavern restaurantware is extremely ... morerare. CONDITION: The plate does show some wear d ue to use. There are scratches on the face surface from silverware but the illustrations are in very good condition. There are two chips in the plate. Only one of the chips is visible from the front of the plate and involves part of the yellow trim. Each of the two chips are less than 1/2" in diameter.
