Fort Moore was established by the SC colonial government in 1715. And it remained occupied until 1766. Fort Moore included a tavern for the soldiers. In Colonial days, patrons brought or bought their own tobacco, and the taverns supplied the pipes. The white ceramic pipes had medium sized bowls with 16" long tapered stems. When a soldier finished smoking, he would break the end off, throw it on the ground, and put the pipe back for the next smoker. Consequently, each one is unique in thickness, length, and color. They are about 2" to 0.5" long with most being about an inch. In the 1970s farmers allowed amateur archeologists like my friends and me to walk their fields if they weren't planted. CONNECTICUT, CIRCA 1760-1780 IN FANTASTIC CONDITION WITH ITS ORIGINAL FEET AND TOP AND DESIRABLE DIMINUTIVE SMALL SIZE. A WILLIAM AND MARY PERIOD AMERICAN TAVERN TABLE IN A VERY SMALL SIZE. THE TURNED BASE IS IN AMERICAN MAPLE AND TIGER MAPLE WITH PINE APRONS AND MOLDED MAPLE BOTTOM STRETCHERS. THE PINE TWO BOARD TOP IS ORIGINAL AS IS THE VERY RARE UNDERSIDE CLEAT. AN EXTREMELY RARE SMALL SIZE. THIS GREAT LITTLE TAVERN TABLE IS A RARE SURVIVOR. It has very early double baluster turned legs with incised decoration. The entire piece was refinished in the late 19th century but you can still see traces of the original red stained surface throughout. THE ... moreCONDITION OF THIS TABLE IS FANTASTIC. NO REPAIRS OR RESTORATIONS. It still retains its original underside cleat as well as its original inside glue blocks. Every wooden pin is original as well. The two board pine top has great shrinkage and in in great condition. Four corner rose head nails appear to be original. Someone did add a couple of later 19th century nails in the center of the top that missed the cleat beneath. This was done when the piece was refinished in the late 19th century. THERE ARE TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL RED PAINT THROUGHOUT. 26" tall. The TWO board pine top is 24 3/4" BY 25 1/4" Typical wear associated with the age of the item. Low starting Price and NO reserve.
