Ampex Vintage 4 Track Sel-Sync Tube Tape Recorder w/351 pre amps
1960s Era.AMPEX Vintage 4 Track Sel-Sync Tube Tape Recorder with 351 electronics. I have never used this machine and due to the age of this item it is sold as is. I have no way to test this unit however when I plug in the power. The lights for all 4 pre amps light up. If you would like to have the machine serviced after purchase. I can arrange a highly skilled Ampex technician to service the unit locally here in Los Angeles. The unit is mounted on a rack chassis on wheels. I can dismantle into individual pieces for shipping or arrange for a local pick up in Los Angeles. History Sel-Sync or Selective Synchronous recording is the process of selectively using some record heads as play back heads so that new signals can be recorded on other tracks in perfect sync with the existing tracks. Sel-sync recording dramatically changed the recording ... moreprocess allowing overdubbing of individual recorded tracks. Sel-sync along with the multi-track head was invented by Ross Snyder at Ampex in 1955. Three problems had to be solved: 1-mechanical alignment. 2-switching of the record track to playback mode#3-And a multitrack erase head. The real problem though was the switching of a track between record and playback mode. Prior to sel-sync record heads were directly wired to the record electronics and playback heads were directly wired to the playback electronics. Also the designs of the two heads were very different. The problem of switching very low-level/high-impedance circuitry without introducing hum or noise had to be solved. Mort Fujii in the Ampex special projects lab was responsible for the actual design[1] Ampex did not patent sel-sync because Ross Snyder did not think it would be of interest to more than a few musicians and an Ampex lawyer said the idea was obvious. From THE 8 TRACK REPAIR CENTER: Up for bid is an internally restored classic Delco 4 knobber for a 1967 Pontiac GTO. Le Mans or Tempest. The front panel is in poor cosmetic shape; thus I'm offering to replace it with a near-mint Chevy panel OR sandblast the original tape door to make it look a little more uniform. The replacement front panel is shown in the pictures. This unit's chassis has had a light media blast to remove the rust and corrosion. And I gave the cabinet a light blast as well. The capstan has been. Resurfaced. Belts have been replaced, motor adjusted to the correct speed, a new spring installed for the track change mechanism, and the entire mechanism has been taken apart, cleaned and relubricated with Dow Corning. High Vacuum Grease. Operation is smooth and very reliable. I can label each wire for hard-wired installation ... moreinto any car. Tascam 34B Reel To Reel Tape Deck-Serviced
Up for sale is one great condition Tascam 34B semi pro 4 channel mastering reel to reel tape deck. This deck was one of the later 4 channel decks that Tascam made. Based on the 10s of 1000s of earlier 3340 and 3440 models, with some refinements. When we fired it up, the mechanism itself worked fine, and the tape path was surprisingly clean. As with all of these decks, the controls and switches were dirty, but they cleaned up nicely with some DeOxIt head cleaner, the good stuff. Other than some minor bias and eq tweaking, the deck needed nothing. We've put 20 hours of test time on the deck. And have played back and recorded on the deck, and all functions are fine. This is a 7 1/2 and 15 IPS deck, with mic and line inputs, with mixing. The solenoid transport is flawless, the pinch roller is soft and has lots of life left in it. All meter ... morelights work, the counter works as expected. The frequency response is flat to 20Khz at 15 IPS, and to 18Khz(usable to 20Khz) at 7 1/2 IPS. The heads are in great shape, many many hours of good use left in them. You can buy any number of high end reel to reel decks here on eBay, either in as-is condition, or many claim that their decks are'restored' but post no specs to back their claims. We have worked on literally 100s of reel to reel recorders, from tube mono machines to 2" 24 track MCI studio units. We have all the MRL calibration tapes, and use a Nakamichi T-100 tape deck analyzer to test frequency response. The deck comes with the original TASCAM takeup reel. The original TASCAM NAB adapters are included as well. There are three very minor cosmetic flaws in them. One is that a SSN has been lightly engraved on the face plate as shown in the last picture. It's under the supply reel. Second. The flip up head cover hinges have snapped, and someone repaired them with loops of wire, and the small loops of wire are neatly drilled through the head cover, and can be seen. There's a dent in the speaker cover(see pictures) and other scratches and wear marks that are normal for a machine of it's age. But this cassette recorder still works!
