Antique English Hand Carved Wood Textile Tapestry Printing Block 1850's FLORAL
Here is a very large textile wood printing block with a floral motif. The block is stamped"Ashworth& Co. Newchurch" and"Manchester" Newchurch. England was a cotton mill town in the early to mid 19th Century. With a quick Google search I was able to find some genealogy information on the Ashworth family in Newchurch in the 1850's- a family of cotton millers and dyers. A beautiful piece of craftsmanship. The block is made of several layers of wood held together by hand-forged square nails. The edges and handholds are hand-chiseled. This block measures approximately 19" x 12" at its longest and widest and about 1.75" deep. This is for a very old antique. Primitive textile? printing block with an paisely handcarved design including 2 flowers(daisies? It is dark brown. Quite solid and is somewhat diamond in shape. The age is not known other than it very. Very old. This also has a handle on the back and the block meausures approx. 8 5" x 7" I do not see any markings that indicate a signature. This block and another I am listing are from my Grandmothers estate. She was Chinese and lived to over 100 years old! I do believe this to be Chinese too.
