Original Public Telephone Double-Sided lighted hanging sign 33lbs.!!
Bought this great. Original Public Telephone lighted, double-sided hanging sign at an estate sale here in Florida. I believe this is brass, copper or some kind of cast bronze material? It is non-magnetic. A great original patina which looks like it was never touched. I certainly did no cleaning nor attempts to spruce it up of any kind. The original owner had passed but family said he worked in NYC many, many years ago and the sign was from there as he was a City worker. She guessed the 1930's but I cannot verify that. He had it displayed on a corner stand with one side showing. It has the screen or bug mesh on the one side, looks like a more modern replacement. The other side has no screen. This mesh I assume is available to duplicate the original which must have kept bugs/spiders from invading the sign. It has been converted inside to ... more3 small-base lights. Has a modern plug with a roll switch. It now has the wire coming out of the"t" on the back side but could of course be routed out the hole in the top and up the mounting pole or pipe as it originally was. There is a hinged door across almost the entire bottom to access the internals. There is a 1" diameter hole in the top hanging section. It looks about 1/4" thick to support the sign from a hanging pipe which probably had a big nut in the inside of the sign to fasten it? This thing is Big& Heavy at 33lbs. Length is about 34" is about 12" high counting the mounting section and about 5-3/8" wide. I have tried to find similar ones online but had no luck, they are either rather rare or I am not searching correctly. So that is what I know. Here we start with a vintage& extremely nice looking Western Electric"Bell Systems" rotary dial desk/table telephone in fantastic working condition. The model number on this spectacular phone is 500DM& I believe it was produced in the late 1960's to mid 1970's era. The casing is made of plastic& it is green in color. The case is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips& really no scratches noteworthy of talking about. The phone is extremely clean inside& out& the case shines like it just came out of the box yesterday. This telephone has been very well cared for as I hope my pictures will show. I have taken many pictures& all pictures can be supersized so you may get a good look at this fabulous looking& working phone. The green cord from the base to the hand set is in excellent condition& ... morematches the case to a tee. The numbers on the dial are in excellent condition as well as the rotary dial itself& works perfectly. The cord from the handset to the base is modular& the cord from the base to the wall jack is also modular& that cord is in excellent condition& about 15 feet long. The thumbwheel ringer control on the bottom is in excellent working condition. So you can adjust the loudness of the ringer to soft or loud. This is a wonderful working telephone& it is all complete. 1930's Bakelite ART DECO Telephone MONOPHONE - BEAUTIFUL
This very attractive and stylish 1930’s era telephone- the Art Deco Bakelite Monophone- is marked Automatic Electric with Patent Numbers on the crisp label. This is a sleek and sophisticated design– the black Bakelite will polish to an inky gloss. The shape is angled and geometric, the chrome appointments are bright and the entire condition is super– no chips or cracks– good earpierces etc. all is well. This fairly large and beautiful phone is exemplary of the Art Deco era, rakish and ahead of it’s time– and, I believe, the first production phone with bells. He worked for a firm which made telegraph equipment for the Swedish government agency Telegrafverket. In 1876. Aged 30, he started a telegraph repair shop with help from his friend Carl Johan Andersson. The shop was in central Stockholm(No. 15 on Drottninggatan, the principal shopping street) and repaired foreign-made telephones. In 1878 Ericsson began making and selling his own telephone equipment. His phones were not technically innovative, as most of the inventions had already been made in the US. In 1878, he made an agreement to supply telephones and switchboards to Sweden's first telecom operating company, Stockholms Allmänna Telefonaktiebolag. Also in 1878.
