VINTAGE VALVE AMPLIFIER 1920S CHURCH HEARING AID
An interesting and unusual 3 valve vintage amplifier. Built in the late 1920s/early 1930s for a church. This was used with custom made hand held candlestick earpieces to enable the hard of hearing to listen to the preacher. It appears to have been built in a recycled radio cabinet which is missing the top cover. The amplifier uses 3 valves. PM1LF, PM2 and PM252. It has an input transformer for the microphone, 2 interstage transformers and an output transformer, made by Igranic and Ferranti. Some other very nice components including a huge Varley'bi-duplex' wirewound resistor in an upright holder. The valve heaters all test OK but otherwise this is sold untested for spares or repair. The sale includes 2 candlestick earpieces which have been made from a pair of headphones. Makers name is'D Nesper' Berlin. An Ardente 309 amplifier complete with the correct Ardente microphone and candlestick earpieces. The amplifier has a valve lineup of 2 x EF37. 6V6G and AZ31. It has a lovely undamaged bakelite case and back cover. The matching microphone also has an undamaged bakelite casing and the mic element is present but the switch and lead have been removed. Both amplifier and mic were made with lightweight silk? cloth grill covers which need replacing. This sale also includes 5 Ardente candlestick earpieces. These have hexagonal bakelite handles with a volume control built in to the base. Three earpieces are in good condition and two are damaged. Some do not have the original knobs. What an outstanding vintage ear trumpet. These are the types of antique hearing instruments that are among the highlights of most collections. This is a variation of the classic London-dome style. It is called a SONOR-TYPE ear trumpet. It is pictured on page 42 of Bennion's guide. This is a small size hand-held ear trumpet. Undoubtedly for a sophisticated lady. It measures 3" to the top of the faux tortoiseshell cylinder and 3 3/4" to the top of the gold-plated listening tube. This celluloid material is especially beautiful when illuminated from beneath the fancy gold-plated grille, highlighting all the beautiful swirling colors of the faux tortoiseshell design. The decorative features also include the fancy gold-leaf band that completely encircles the upper end. There is a beautiful off white, almost translucent ear tip which ... moreis removable(it unscrews for cleaning) Many of these are cracked, as is this one(see photo) But the crack is on the underside and is not noticeable. The gold-plated listening tube has lost some of its plating, it looks tarnished. There is a wavy patch in the celluloid alongside where the listening tube inserts into its shaft. From what I can tell this is a very rare hearing aid made by Audivox in 1961. There was one sold 4 years ago but I can't find another one. Even the hearing aid museum is lacking a picture of this particular model! Discovered at an estate sale. I never attempt to clean vintage items so this will arrive as you see it. It has not been tested and the batteries leaked so the battery cavity will need to be cleaned but I kept them in tact because even the bettered are old! This great conversation piece is from the 1950s and comes complete in the box with an additional battery! Sonotone was hailed as"The House of Hearing" as you can see from inside the box. The device and its battery are resting comfortably on a bed of crushed blue velvet and are in spectacular condition given their age. I do not know if this works as I did not want to open the new battery, but you could have a working piece of history on your hands!
