Shore Scleroscope portable hardness tester
We have had this tester in storage for about fourteen years after we lost our office lease in year 2000. Before that. It worked OK and we used it a few times when our regular microhardness tester and Rockwell testers weren't able to do the tests. I tried it today, and it still reads OK, as the two of the pictures will attest. The one picture shows the result of a test on the 19 to 20 Shore hardness test block(also a Shore Instrument product, but rather well worn) The other picture shows a result with the 95 to 97 Shore hardness test block, where it's reading a little low because there are so many pre-existing test impressions already on the block. If you're going to use this instrument in a laboratory environment. I'd recommend looking for some brand new calibrated test blocks. For a working environment such as a machine shop, ... morehome shop, or repair facility, it will be just fine. Instron seems to have acquired the Shore Instrument Company, but the Instron website is presently of no help. The dial is calibrated in the two other most useful hardness scales: Brinell(3000 kg test load) and Rockwell C. It's not immediately obvious. But you can disengage the test mechanism for use on an object that is too large to fit on the stand. There are two caveats with the use of the tester in this manner: 1) You have to hold the tester exactly vertical while pressing it firmly against the object under test, which also ought to be horizontal and not excessively curved; and(2) The object under test must have forty times the mass of the tester's little diamond-tipped hammer so that a minimal amount of kinetic energy will be transferred to the object, analogously to the proper size of hammer for use on an anvil. Rule of thumb: the tester frame weighs about a dozen pounds, so the object you test must either weigh more than that or be resting in turn on a heavy metal object such as a steel plate or the table of a machine tool. The large flat-faced diamond in the center of the top of this Rockwell hardness testing anvil is meant for testing thinner objects with the hardened steel or tungsten carbide balls used with the B. E& H hardness ranges or with the various Superficial Hardness Tester ranges that do not use a Brale diamond penetrator. The base is 0.7495 inch in diameter to fit the Wilson-made Rockwell testers, and the body is nominally 1-1/4 inch in diameter. The body has a specific warning impressed on it that the anvil is never to be used with the Brale diamond penetrator. As shown in the third image.
