Lot of 2 antique / vintage estate mechanical chatelaine pencil, notepad pencil
1) The one with the most pictures. And the older of the two, is a chatelaine accessory, I'm sure. It's probably gold plated, but it is totally unmarked, so I can't really say for sure. There is a little verdegris patina(green corrosion) on the flat topped ball finial. The finial is ornately decorated in a scrolling floral design. It is set with an amber colored stone that shows a lot of scratches on its surface. The finial unscrews to insert pencil leads. The ridged ring around the barrel slides down to extend the pencil point outward. Each of the barrel's six sides is embossed with a triple line design, with a pattern of waves at regular intervals. The more I looked the piece over under magnification, the more design intricacies I found. It is surprisingly, finely detailed. Quite a nice piece. 2) The slightly larger pencil ... moreis very plain. By comparison. It was probably attached to a notebook, originally. I don't think this one would have been a chatelaine accessory. There is a short remnant of bead chain attached to the bail that pierces the barrel. It has no decoration or markings. The ball finial, which is some kind of plastic that glows in the dark( Pulls off the end to insert the pencil leads. The lead is advanced by holding the point and twisting the six sided barrel. One of my children bought this for me at a post-Christmas 1987 sale at Bottega Veneta(on NYC's Madison Ave) of items with defects-three exterior stains + some minor scuffs. It was. Perhaps, a display piece. I never used it so it is fair to call it New Old Stock with Defects. This claim is supported by the fact that the interior pigskin lining is absolutely pristine as is the little green leather pencil holder on the inner right side(pristine because it has never been used) It has been stored since I received it and was only removed the other day for photographs for this listing. Now for some specifics: it is about 8.75 inches( c.18.25cm) closed. About 17.25 inches full length.
