Bearing a fully intact and rare"shipped from Venice, California" decal underneath- this label was used only for a brief period of time in 1952 when Zenith plastics was no longer under manufacturing contract but the production of the shells had not yet begun at Herman Miller Factories in Zeeland, Mich(1953) During that interval of time the remaining Zenith inventory was shipped directly from ... morethe Eames' Venice studio location under the HM name. CONDITION: This extremely vivid 2nd production Salmon colored shell chair is in outstanding condition. Completely intact and fully functional. The fiberglass Zenith shell is super clean with no obvious chips or cracks with consistent vibrant translucent fibers with no apparent discoloring or fading. These early Zenith Salmon colored shells typically are faded to the point of being pale flesh pink due to the unstable nature of the Red Pigments used in the fiberglass molding combined with 60+ years of UV exposure. This fine specimen still retains a vivid amount of"salmon" vibrancy to the pigment and has an even tone to front, sides and back.obviously it was used very little and well protected from the elements of aging. The low Zinc X base is equally as clean and problem free with all 4 glides intact. This base sits much lower than the typical desk chair bases- slightly lower than a Rocker or LCW chair. DIMENSIONS: The chairs general dimensions are 25" tall to top of back with an overall width of 25" at the arms. The seat is 14" high…chair will be disassembled for shipping to meet regulation limits.

Herman Miller Gilbert Rohde Designer Gilbert Rohde(1894-1944) was born and raised in New York. The son of a cabinetmaker. He left high school to pursue a variety of jobs, landing a short stint at a local paper, the Bronx News, drawing political cartoons. In 1923 he turned the experience into a job as an illustrator at the Abraham& Strauss department store. Inspired by a trip to the Paris Exhibition in 1925, Rohde began designing furniture and his early work was sold at Lord& Taylor. An exuberant modernist, his pieces gleaned simplicity and rationalism from Bauhaus design and a sense of form and ornamentation from Art Deco. He worked predominantly in Bakelite and chrome, the materials that made up the visual vocabulary of the period. Between 1927-28 Rohde designed the interiors for Avedon fashion stores. Where his wife was part of ... morethe advertising team. Heywood-Wakefield of Massachusetts began picking up his designs in 1930, with a bentwood chair being one of their most successful pieces. Restless for a more substantial opportunity, he went west to Grand Rapids, Michigan where companies like John Widdicomb and Herman Miller had turned the city into a hub of furniture design and manufacturing. Rohde attracted the interest of Herman Miller and began designing for them in 1931. The company had been making traditional pieces and historical reproductions and was close to bankruptcy when they accepted Rohde`s modern work in a last ditch attempt to stay afloat. Apparently the miracle they needed, Rohde convinced them that modernism was the reigning style and proved it with his designs for bedroom furniture shown at the 1933 Chicago World`s Fair. Fortified by their updated image, Herman Miller had Rohde design entire sets for living and dining rooms and began making plans to halt their production of traditional pieces. Rohde designed a popular line of modular office furniture for Herman Miller, and they would later reintroduce the bentwood chair he made for Heywood-Wakefield. He also acted as the Design Director fo

Here from the late 1950's or early"60's is a 32 page sales brochure extolling the virtues of modern furniture. Specifically Herman Miller products designed by George Nelson, Charles Eames and Alexander Girard. I was unable to show all the pages due to the constraints of space, but most of the classic Herman Miller products from the 50's are shown. If you are familiar with the present day Herman Miller products, you will know that many of the products are still manufactured. I was able to obtain this and many other Herman Miller pieces of literature from a former designer who passed away. I plan on putting other pieces on ebay in the near future, so look for them. But, they still look good. The condition is fair. Some rough spots on the corners of the seat& back panels(pictured)There is also small pieces of veneer that have broken off(pictured) Also, there is some minor blemishes on the seats, not very noticeable. The best part is, that they have not been drill and all the shockmounts seem to be good. No rust on the bases and no broken glides. I believe that the veneer is walnut. Chair is in excellent vintage condition.Beautiful! Beautiful Brazilian rosewood. no longer in production. Tags have been removed but you can still see where they where. One side arm rest shock mount needs to be replaced and two top cushion clips need to be replaced. Original upholstery has been replaced by quality white vinyl and white zippers. Weather or not the original cushion material was replaced with new is unknown but it does not appear to have any down feathers. Indicating that it was made by the Evans company and distributed by Herman Miller while they were in Michigan. The chair is in very good shape- some normal wear and tear- small scratches and scrapes(mostly on the sides of the seat) see pictures. The 4 feet are there and appear to be original. The rubber mounts are there. And while they are completely together, seem a little dry- I don't know if I would trust anyone to sit on this without replacing them(parts are available on ebay) This is a very nice example of a classic and rare original chair!
