Mr. Marble stayed with the company and directed its manufacturing operations until 1895. Another fire in April 1897 is mentioned. The New Register April 8, 1897 issue has a front-page article"A Midnight Blaze" talking about this fire. The paper said it was the work of arsonists and threw 40 men out of work. Despite the seriousness of the fire, the news article ends with"Mr. Charles Klinger was absent on a fishing trip to Castalia when the factory burned. His enforced return was undoubtedly a decided relief to the trout in that locality. Mr. Marble left the company. Secretary Desk and Chair - Made in Italy
This beautiful secretary desk was made in Italy and measures 34.5 inches wide. 34 inches high, 14.5 inches deep. The desk is complete with two large drawers. And small interior drawers in the top, and the key to lock the desk top. The finish is veneered and inlayed with multiple colors of wood. The finish shows some signs of checking and there are some wear marks on legs and edges but there are no missing pieces of veneer. I have uploaded a picker of the largest mark. The desk condition over all is in very good. The chair is 38.5 inches high and the seat measures 15 by 15 inches. The carved wood is in excellent condition as the upholstery. I am selling this locally only as I cannot imagine the cost to ship this. This is the sale of the Desk. Chair and typewriter only. The desk is in excellent condition and it is believed that its last address was with a 1916 Ford Motor Company office of some kind. All drawers open and close easily w/o catching. The mechanical system for hiding the typewriter works smoothly as well as does the rolling cover for protecting privacy. The chair is of the same information. The leather is in excellent condition and all the casters work nicely. No signs of cracked or damaged wood. The Underwood typewriter has patent information from May 1900 to August 17th 1915. Antique Vintage Roll Top Tambour Desk with Chair.
An older an HEAVY rolltop desk. The rough measurements are 5ft by 2/12ft by 4ft. Some chips on the corners but overall in great condition. Has a lock and key for one of the drawers and a lock for the roll top part. I dont have the key for that lock so I took it off but it comes with the desk. Also matching rolling desk chair which is also a little heavy. Not opposed to shipping. But it would be a couple hundred dollars because of the weight. Happy bidding.

This antique chair dates from c.1810. We believe the frame to be constructed from mahogany. Although please note that we are not 100% sure of the wood type. The chair would benefit from some restoration and from re-upholstery. It has lovely shaped back rails with pierced decoration, and is supported on square legs at the front and square swept legs at the back. The legs have chamfered inner edges and lower stretchers between. The chair is over-upholstered. Condition: Overall this chair does require some restoration. It is solid with only minimal movement in the joints. But it would benefit from being re-polished and re-upholstered. There is some wear, scuffing ... moreand fading to the woodwork and the seat is sunken, grubby and badly worn. There is some wood loss around the feet. There are some signs of old restoration- one of the seat corner supports is a more modern replacement. There are some signs of old woodworm to the rails underneath the seats- this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution. Please refer to photographs below. SECRET DOOR AND CHAIR This desk was purchased for the 1905 opening of Philadelphia's Northest High School for Manual Trades at 8th and Lehigh Ave. Later. The school became Northeast High School for Boys until a new Northeast High opened in 1957. Then the building was renamed Edison High School. In 1966 I rescued this desk from the school incinerator. In 1972 I had it refurbished and used it for the next 40 years at home. The desk is 50" wide and 48" high. It has deep drawers. A working lock and a secret door on the lower right side. The roll up sticks a bit on the way up, but otherwise operates smoothly. The desk surface is a bit rough and there are definite but minor signs of age. A very limited production of 250 hand built. High quality, finely detailed desks were crafted by Ercol UK in the early 1990's. With much of the country's elm trees destroyed by Dutch Elm Disease, it is no longer possible to cut down an elm tree to produce furniture. These desks were crafted from carefully selected fallen trees on the Estate of Floors Castle in Scotland. History: I purchased this desk. Number 25, for 6,000 pounds from Paul Adams Furnishings in Hull, UK in 1995 while on foreign assignment. I returned to the US in 1996 with this desk and continued to use it daily through 2008. In downsizing my living space in 2009, this desk was put into heated storage. I have decided that rather than waiting for the next"perfect" home for it to reside in, I am selling it so that it finds a new home to be admired and used! ... moreCondition: This desk has been carefully used in a non-smoking home throughout its entire life.
