Vintage 1965 Ludwig Champagne Sparkle 14x14 Floor Tom Drum NO RESERVE
Up for auction is a nice little Vintage 1965 14x14 Ludwig Champagne Sparkle floor tom drum. First off. This drum sounds amazing. I just put new heads in it a month ago. Remo coated Ambassador batter and Clear Ambassador resonant side. Great ring, warm Ludwig tone, all the stuff you need to complete the jazz kit you've been building. These are becoming harder and harder to come by in eBay. Secondly this drum is from mid 1965 and has seen some use. At one point, the batter hoop was reglued, and a small section of the hoop slipped down a 1/16" or so, pictured. Totally fixable, but I do not do any of that, and it tuned fine to my ears. The reso side hoop has a few blemishes, but also tunes fine. Looks like the reso side is level and all. This is not a perfect drum by any means, but I believe in FULL disclosure so is am describing to ... morethe best of my ability. The back side of the shell(badge side being the front) at the seam is sun faded, pictured. Seam is lifting very slightly but nothing crazy, pictured. A blemish on the side panel, pictured. The front and other shell sides on the drum wrap are great. So from a stage perspective, the screaming fans don't see anything, not that they could anyways, champagne sparkle hides imperfections like camouflage. All the 16 large Classic chrome lugs are in working order, one or two have some pitting, other are in pretty good shape. Original Ludwig Floor Tom leg mounts are good, but there are replacement legs, brand new though. Not sure about the hoops but the tension rods look like replacements to me. Shell appears to be in round to me. Heads fit fine with no binding. The muffler is missing. NO extra holes and NO other issues I can find. Paint is chipping at the reso rings but interior seam is good. This is a HIGHLY sought after drum and is in player's condition. You could reglue the batter hoop or add some filler but that up to you. A beautiful example of deco-chrome design in microphones. This D10 was manufactured by American Microphone Co. located originally in sunny LA and later Pasadena, CA. It's an omnidirectional dynamic mic, and sounds typically thin and peaky as many early dynamics did. I can't nail down the date of manufacture, but investigation puts it into the early to mid 1940's. This mic was never one of their iconic mics, such as the D9, D22(the Jackie Kennedy mic) or the later dynamic/ribbon mash-ups. But it is certainly one of the"space-age/Jetson/Star Trek mics ever made. This auction comes with the D10 mic. Cable with mating 4-pin connector(rare) and original box. The pre-amp end of the cable was an early 4-pin Amphenol connector. This classic Austrian mic was a staple in live performances by Sinatra. Davis(Sammy) and many other fine performers. In fact, if you search YouTube, you'll find Sinatra using the D24 in the studio to record September of My Years for his 1965 album release. Rumor has it that the D24 was discontinued because of a patent violation claimed by Neumann. Who knows? This EXACT mic.
