Old Ceremonial Indian Basket with Spider Woman Crosses - NO RESERVE
Here is a very old Pueblo or Navajo polychrome ceremonial Indian basket with 4 Spider Woman Cross designs. This one was used. And has an old remnant of cloth though the center hole. The field is sumac and the crosses are done in red dyed sumac and outlined in black dyed sumac. It has a nice braided or herringbone rim. It measures about 11 1/2 inches in diameter and 3 1/2 inches deep. It appears to have been stored for many years with some other ceremonial items, because on the back are wide areas of white that appears to be mineral paint(see close-up)which is used by the Pueblos for painting ceremonial objects. It would clean off, but I think it's better left there as part of the history of the basket. This basket is quite old and looks to be from near the turn of the century. This is probably from the 1st quarter of the 20th Century and measures about 10 1/2 inches in diameter and 2 1/2 inches deep. It's in excellent condition and is woven with sumac. RARE Old Makah Indian Basket Canoe Bailer - NO RESERVE
This is a VERY unique item in my experience. In all of my many years of buying/selling/collecting Indian baskets, this is the first one of these I've seen! It's an old Makah Canoe bailing basket from the Seattle Sound area. I don't know the age, but appears to be old and I don't see evidence that it's been used. It measures about 12 inches long, 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide and it's in excellent condition. It's made from a very thin sheet of cedar bark, the ends of which are creased and extend up and are tied to a hand-carved old wooden handle, with a shape much the same as those old Lincoln Logs. Road number 8115, All of the lift rings, wipers, grab irons, steps, handles, horns are there. One air hose is missing on the rear(small white spot in photo 5) One of four 1/16" tabs on the side of the control hatch is missing(photo 7) Two stanchions are loose, one on the front and one on the side. The Sunshades are missing; these are easily made with plastic or brass sheet. One side windscreen is missing and the other is poorly glued(see photos 11 and 12) easily made from clear plastic sheet.
