Vintage MSA Skullgard Coal Mine Safety Hard Hat Miner Fiberglass Lamp Bracket
Up for auction I have this old miner's hat. I'm not sure how old it is. I'm guessing from the 1940s or 1950s. I think it is fiberglass. It measures approx. 12 1/4" X 10 3/4" It has the lamp bracket on the front and the cord holder on the back. The bracket inside of the hat is firmly in place, but has some breakage on the plastic. It will need a good cleaning, as I didn't want to use any chemicals on it and I couldn't get the bracket thing on the inside to come out, so you will get it kind of dirty. It has scratches and some chipping on the color. There are a few tiny chips along the rim. On the underside it has the letters MSA and 3 different numbers in a circle- 75 76 77. This is an MSA Skullgard Full Brim hard hat with a lace in liner that can be adjusted for different head sizes. The hat is in great shape with no cracks and the liner is still intact with no rips or tears but some small cracking in the head band. The sticker inside is worn away. Showing an L2 in the crown of the hat which I assume is the size but not sure. Check pictures carefully and ask questions, I will try to answer them, Thanks. A vintage M-S-A( Mine Safety Appliances) SKULLGARD- TYPE(K) adjustable safety hat, it adjusts from approx. 22 1/2" to 24" in circumference. The leather band inside is dried out and it needs a good leather treatment to make it more pliable but it's still all there and it feels sturdy. Everything else looks great, some light scratches here and there but I couldn't find any other issues to report. The photos make it look almost red but in person the color is more chestnut. I couldn't find any information as to what it's made of but I saw one listing describing it as Micarta, perhaps that's a different material altogether. Made in Pittsburgh, PA. this company has been manufacturing safety equipment for a very long time, currently they're involved in the production of safety suits for the folks working with Ebola ... morepatients.
