As far as I can remember, I was born with a fishing rod in my hand. Having grown up on the Rogue River in Southern Oregon, I got my start fly fishing at the young age of 7 under the ... moretutelage of my father. I can remember family photos of me with trout that were actually bigger than me, if that gives you any idea of how little I was when I first started catching fish. I caught my first steelhead not long after I started fly fishing and it was all over from there…the fishing addiction had its ugly hooks set securely into me!

I consider myself a pretty experienced oarsman having rowed the Upper and Lower Deschutes River, almost the entire length of the Rogue River including the Wild and Scenic section, the Colorado, the Arkansas, the North & South Umpqua, the North & South Santiam, the Sandy, the John Day, the McKenzie, the Upper Willamette, the Task, and the Wilson, amongst others. I pride myself on safety and I’m a certified EMT, so you can rest assured you are in good hands when you are with me on the river.

When I’m not guiding Central Oregon fly fishing trips, you will find me going ever-further in search of backcountry powder, sailing my Hobie Cat, Surfing the Oregon Coast, or working at St. Charles Medical Center as an Emergency Technician. I spent 5 years in Nicaragua where I owned a surf resort, before returning to the USA, and I’m fluent in Spanish as such. I consider myself to be an avid outdoorsman, and I enjoy sailing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and spending time doing all of it with my wife, Theresa, our baby girl, Rogue and our two Labrador Retrievers, McKenzie & Charlie.

I love to share a tale of my life’s adventures, having lived a few, and appreciate hearing yours as well. I believe that fly fishing is an experience that can be life changing, and I would appreciate the opportunity to share the experience with you. My favorite quote by Mark Twain resonates with me:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Good Fishin’ To Ya!

Nic Reid
Vail grew up fly fishing in Western Washington, where he could often be found packing his old school float tube up to some desolate alpine lake, or bumming rides over the east side ... moreof the mountains to fly fish the Yakima River. Vail moved to California after college and spent a half dozen years skiing, climbing, and fishing through out the Sierra Mountains. He coached skiing at Squaw Valley, and guided people rock climbing and fly fishing in Tahoe and Yosemite. Vail moved to Bend in 2002 and has since been fishing and guiding the Deschutes River and surrounding areas.

Some of Vail’s best attributes as a guide are his patience, and his ability to instruct, along with possessing a certain “fishy” sense that puts his clients onto fish. Vail is a conscience and courteous guide, who is attentive to detail, safety oriented and hardworking. You can rest assured that he will do everything in his power to make sure that you have a memorable and successful experience!
Brad was born and raised in Central Oregon. His parents are both avid fishers, and helped foster the same in Brad. It is pretty obvious that Central Oregon, and Oregon for that matter ... moreare Brad's home waters. He is very intimate with many of the fisheries here, including the Lower Deschutes and Crooked River. Brad also has spent some time guiding in Alaska. He is a very talented fellow, who runs his own rod making and repair business as well as being a guide. He spends his winters on the coast guiding salmon and steelhead and his summers in Central Oregon. Brad has won the praise of many of our clients for his class act on the river, patience and professionalism, and his ability to provide epic days for his clients!
Jim is our resident Upper Rogue River expert. Living in Jacksonsville, Oregon wether if he is guiding or not Jim can be found most days on his favorite section of the Rogue, the upper ... moresection in and around Shady Cove. Jim has an intimate knowledge of this section of the Rogue, at one point owning a house on one of the premiere holes on the river. Jim personifies the gentleman guide, you will not find a more gracious, humble, yet knowledgable guide on the river. Jim willing shares his love of the river, sport, and intimate knowledge of this section of the Rogue with clients and fellow anglers alike! Any day spent with Jim on the river is a memorable, pleasurable experience!
Ryan is our camp host extraordinaire. He is in charge of transporting and setting up the camp and gear. His attention to detail will ensure that your off river experience will be as ... morememorable as your on river experience and your gear will safely make it from put in to take out. His skill as a pro “bagger” means you can rest assured that your time will be spent fishing and relaxing, with no worries. Ryan has lived in Bend, Oregon since he was young. He started fishing with his father on the Deschutes and the high lakes of the Cascades as a child. He quickly grew to love and appreciate the outdoor opportunities the Central Oregon has to offer and ultimately decided to make recreation his career. Ryan has been an avid boats-man for 18 years and enjoys all types of river transport, including rafting, drift boating, kayaking, and even scuba diving. He took up fly fishing at age 20 and is now thoroughly “hooked” on the hunt for Deschutes "Red Sides" and steelhead.
Hometown: Durango, Colorado Brian grew up fishing the lakes and streams of northern Illinois and Wisconsin and started fly fishing at age twelve. He moved to Colorado after graduating ... morehigh school and has a BS in Chemistry from Fort Lewis College. He is currently the head guide for the San Juan Angler. When not fishing he loves to spend time with his two kids Ada and John and wife Amy.

Brian is a veteran to Team USA and has proudly represented the United States in 2007 and 2013 World Championships of Fly Fishing.
Outfitter:
Cole was born and raised in Woodland Park Colorado before relocating to Durango to attend Fort Lewis College. He got his first trout fishing education, growing up on a farm with trout ... moreponds and surrounded by rivers.

Cole graduated from Fort Lewis with a Tourism Resort Management degree and spent some years working in the hospitality and resort industry before taking a position with the San Juan Angler assisting in the management of the shop as well as guiding.

He loves to spend his days off exploring the back country high mountain streams in the area as well as dredging the deep sections of the animas for the big ones.
Outfitter:
Will is one of the head guides here at Animas Valley Anglers, he also happens to be the owner. Be it an addiction or a love for the craft Will can be found fishing and guiding through ... moreout the Southwest well over 200 days each year. He has been going strong on these local waters since 1989, and started guiding in 1992. Will started his guide career with Duranglers in Durango Colorado. Will guided for seven years with that outfit before starting Animas Valley Anglers in 2000.

He brings a tremendous amount of knowledge, expertise and a positive, enjoyable attitude to a guide trip. Will is comfortable on any body of water, in pursuit of any species of fish. Be it Rio Grande brownies, picky San Juan bows, Babine steelhead or anything in between. Will has logged more guided float hours on the Animas and upper San Juan (Pagosa) than most anyone. Will has put in his time on water making him one of the regions most sought after guides. After spending a day on the water with Will you will have learned the true meaning of the "fly fishing experience."

When not guiding...
Will can be found late in the fall and early winter exploring the remote waters of north central BC for the worlds largest steelhead. He spends countless hours probing the Kispiox, Babine, Bulkley, Skeena and many other remote waters with friends, his wife Amanda and their black lab Kispa. (Chloe, their Dane/Lab mix has to stay home)

Will and Amanda are also proud parents. They welcomed Benjamin Rally Blanchard into the world December 15th 2010. Ben's first fishing trip to the Animas was 10 days later on Christmas day.

When not working hard on the oars or wading knee deep in a steelhead stream Will can be found behind the lens of his camera documenting the natural world and the fly fishing lifestyle. He also spends a lot of time in front of the computer as a web designer and graphic artist for Animas Valley Anglers.

One of his true passions however is ice hockey. He spends countless hours on the ice at the Chapman Hill Ice Arena in Durango Colorado as well as the frozen ponds, lakes and rinks near Smithers BC.
Aaron Hyder is one heck of a guide, plus he just happens to be one of the nicest ones out there on the water. His laid back no-pressure style, (like so many AVA guides) has earned ... morehim a great reputation from the San Juan to Alaska and all waters in between. He can get rookies into fish in no-time and tune up veteran anglers like no other.

His guide career put him in Alaska on the Togiak River from 2000-2005 (all salmon species on both single-handed fly rods and spey). He has lived in Durango since '98, but has been fishing the Juan and the other great waters of the Southwest since he was 12-years old. He started guiding on the Juan professionally in 2005.

All of Aaron's clients and friends would say he is an ace on the Juan. They are all starting to say the same for all the water he is sharing north of the San Juan. From the Rio Grande, Animas and Upper San Juan to all the mountain streams around Durango Aaron's becoming a hot commodity in the guide world.

Aaron has a fantastic guide style, but his ability to teach new anglers is uncanny. He can also help accomplished anglers reach personal angling goals quickly. A day on the water with Aaron will leave you feeling like you accomplished something. Like big fish? Well, Aaron is the guy for the job. Big fish just fall in his net.

When not guiding...

Aaron loves spending time with his family, teaching, playing golf, snow and water skiing, baseball games and drinking cold PBR.
