Vintage Hand-made O-Gauge Train Layout Lumber Yard Building
This Vintage O-gauge train layout Lumber Yard building was part of a Lionel train collection of my Dad's. Who built this building by hand in the early 1950s. This structure was intricately built by a man who had a penchant for his Lionel Trains. His train layouts were only set up infrequently during Christmas seasons. This Lumber Yard had not been used since 1974, which was the last time my Dad had his trains set up when I was in the 5th grade. My Dad left his train collection to me in 1999, a while before he died, and I had hopes of picking up where he left off. Although I have many of my Dad's hobbies, the reality of making the time to embrace his train enthusiasm seems so distant. His trains and accessories have continued to sit in a box and I have decided it would be a shame to not let them live on in the hands of other enthusiasts ... morewho appreciate the hobby. Please look at the photos closely. I will attempt to describe this piece accurately. This structure will easily fit O-gauge train accessories and was an attractive piece to his train lay-outs. It is made of a wood base, wood beam construction, and pressed cardboard siding walls, joined with glue and brad nails. The structure is in excellent condition and has no cracks or weak joints. This building is 60 years old, but it is still strong. The building's base dimensions are 10 1/4" Long x 5 1/4" Wide x 7 3/4" High at the gable peak. The front stairs add an additional 1" of width to the building's footprint. The interior cannot be accessed from the outside. The windows are actual plastic inserts giving the authentic look of glass through the frames from the outside. I'm not sure if there is a hole in the base of the office portion to insert a wired lamp for illumination, but one could easily be cut to do so. The paint is in excellent condition, and the years have made the Lumber Yard Building look like a realistic old building. Salvaged deck wood 40 yrs old. Long redwood heart planks 2x8. You can't even buy this width anymore! Support beams are most likely douglass fir. They were painted in grey paint from Lockheed. Very special paint that has protected the wood against decay. Amazing! Ends of boards have rot. You will have to haul from site. Bring help. Used as a dance floor originally. This material is heavy duty and features interlocking edges. Some of the pieces have experienced some damage to the receiving edges during transportation but are still functional with mild repair. I bought the lumber at home depot and was very satisfied with it's performance.
