Sierra Nevada Wood and Lumber Company(S.N.W.L.Co. trade token. Good for a 10c loaf of bread at the company boarding house. Aluminum; octagon; approximately 29mm across. See scans for best condition report. This company. Founded by logging men Hobart and Marlette, operated in the mountains on the east side of Lake Tahoe from 1878 to about 1895 with their base at Incline. Nevada. Their logging activities moved to Hobart Mills. California in 1896(about 20 miles northwest of Incline) to exploit more productive woodlands as the eastern Tahoe Basin by this time had been largely cleared of timber. Incline was named for the company's very steep rail tramway which was powered by a stationary steam engine and utilized heavy cables to pull cars of lumber over the ridge to the east. At the top of"the incline" Lumber entered a large wooden ... moreV flume that carried it to the Virginia City& Gold Hill water tunnel. The lumber then floated in a separate flume through the tunnel to Little Valley and in one more lumber flume to its discharge point at Lakeview(between Carson City and Washoe Valley) on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. The lumber was in high demand locally for the Comstock(Virginia City and its silver and gold mines) Reno and Carson City. A portion of it was exported out of the area; especially in later years after the mining boom subsided. This token was used at Incline or Hobart Mills; or possibly both locations.
