I am selling 2 little. Very unusual, vintage collectable pencil holders/letter opener. The silver metal letter opener has no markings on it but the pencil that is in it is marked"L&C Hardmuth Czecho-Slovakia" so I think it is save to say that the opener is from the same munufacturer. The opener is 6 cms in length and has a small small brown band half way along it which I hope you can identify in the photo, I cannot say what that band is made of. The other yellow metal holder is from H& G Simonds Ltd. Brewers and again I cannot give a date of manufacture. The holder is 7 Cms in length and the end cap 2.5 cms also yellow metal.

This is a handwritten letter signed by 19th century military leader and prohibition leader James Appleton. Appleton(1785-1862) served as Brigadier General during the War of 1812. Appleton was born in Ipswich. Massachusetts and worked as a silversmith and jeweler in Mablehead, Massachusetts. From 1830 until 1850 he worked as a jeweler in Portland, Maine. Appleton served in the state legislature in Massachusetts and Maine. He became known as the Father of Prohibition(with Neal Dow) and was a vocal anti-slavery advocate. The letter is written on a sheet of light blue paper 8x10 with a pen and comes with his signature on the bottom of the document. Up for auction is an original U.S. soldier letter from the Mexican American War era. The letter was written on November 19th. 1846 from Saltillo, Mexico. The letter was written by Captain William Chapman a member of the 5th Infantry. Captain Chapman was engaged in all of the early battles of the war on the Northern Front. He served with the 5th Infantry for the entire duration of the war and was brevetted twice for heroism. The letter is four full pages in length and is filled with interesting. Historical information. Captain Chapman wrote detailed descriptions of places and events. He shared observations and opinions of Mexico. The war, and people from the perspective of a mid-western U.S. soldier. It states Yellow Pine and Oak flooring and there's an emblem also depicted for the saw mill company. The brass handle is in great condition with a nice patina. George William Norris(186 1-1944) was a U.S. politician f rom the state of Nebraska and a leader of progressive and liberal causes in Congress. He served five terms in the Unite d States House of Representatives as a Republican from 1903 until 1913. And five terms in the U. S. Senate from 1913 until 1943.
