Nice vintage David White Instruments Company model 8300 Transit Level with it's original plumb bob. Accessories, and dovetailed wood storage/protective case. The transit is very clean and shiney with only few blemishes in it's enamel finish. Was purchased from a local homeowner and appears to have been used very little over the years. The wood case is solid and sound and it's(original) varnish finish still displays nicely as shown. Note that the leather shoulder carrying strap has pulled apart. Up for bids is a vintage or antique Keuffel and Esser Surveyor's transit level complete with wooden tri-pod stand. I could not locate a serial number on this beautiful item so don't have an exact age. It does have the word"FAVORITE" embossed on the top of the metal base and appears in full working condition with no parts missing. Company name of"Keuffel& Esser Co. NY" is stamped on the brass tube.There is a liquid level on the unit which is functioning as it should. The glass on both ends of the optical tube are still intact and in great shape. The optics are focused at the eye piece and the view is still bright and clear. The optical tube appears to be of brass construction while the base of the unit is a combination of quality heavy well constructed metals. Model number on the bottom is"8300-221" Hard plastic lid is surface-worn but the plastic has no chips or cracks. The handle is cracked in half but the two links of hardware have been joined by a piece of wire- don't knock it. It works. Instrument shows surface wear and needs some cleaning. Vintage TRANSIT SURVEY BRUNSON Level Marked U. S.
Vintage Brunson Survey Transit with box. This transit is in good condition for it's age but it does show wear such as paint loss and is chipped in places. The optics appear to be in good condition and movement is smooth. The paint has rubbed off in places and has been chipped and the paint used to cover it is a slightly different color. The box has a thin long crack in it which can be glued to give more strength but it is still solid. A nice piece of engineering history. It is stamped U.S. on the top of the transit. Write with any questions Transit has the patent numbers 2208014 which was filed in 1938. And 2329978 which was filed in 1942. Transit Measures: 18 inches long x 9 1/8 inches. Buff and Buff #14221 Level/Transit/Case/Tripod
Own a piece of history. Vintage surveying equipment began it's career when Henry Ford bought these instruments for his civil engineers to build out the infrastructure necessary to support his burgeoning auto business. He needed railroad access. And Detroit and Ironton RR was born, which is where these instruments found their home for the next 50 years. Along the way, they became Detroit, Toledo, and Ironton RR, or DT&I. Old-timers from the Detroit area would remember this RR as the one with the big cement arches over the tracks. In the 80's, Grand Trunk bought DT&I, and these tools were ultimately retired. Still viable tools, they work flawlessly, while the patina is a testament to their experience.
