Plumb, instructions and tripod. I have another survey level listed. Another name for this item is surveyor transit. Level: 3 1/2" height x 10 1/8" long. round part is approximately 4 1/4" wide. All measurements are approximate. Used condition. There is a gap between what appears to be 2 pieces of wood on the bottom of the box. Box is soiled. Has moisture stains, scratches, and finish loss. Hinges and metal pieces have rusty surfaces. Top part of box is also either split or 2 pieces of wood. Inside the box is similar condition and the foam piece is deteriorating. The utility level looks to be in better condition. The level part works. I don't know ... morehow to focus the view but the glass does not appear to have damage other than needs a cleaning. This piece also needs cleaning. The plumb is as seen in photos. Used and worn. Instructions are dirty, worn, moisture related problems. A vintage transit from 1942 with box. The box strap is dry rot and broken. See pictures. Otherwise the transit it self is in working order. Serial number on the box matches the serial number on the transit How To Date Your W. L. E. Gurley Survey Instruments: Gurley instruments can be tricky to date because not all Gurley instruments are serialized. Gurley started using serial numbers in November 1908 and that serial number actually contained the year the instrument was manufactured. The serial numbers can be found on levels. Transits, and larger compasses. Any level. Transit, or larger compass manufactured after November 1908 will have a serial number on it located on the level bar, face of the compass, or on the vernier plate. Gurley may have started to use serial numbers because of a second location that was opened in Seattle in 1908 creating ... morea need to keep track of the instruments sold out of both locations. The serial number log books for Gurley are currently held at the New York State Museum. The first instrument listed in Gurley’s serial number log book is number 81. Up for bid is the vintage/antique ENGINEERING/ SURVEYING TRANSIT LEVEL/ SPOTTING SCOPE by W. L.E. GURLEY in Troy. N.Y. circa the mid to late 1800's(best guess) as seen in the pictures/ as described in the title. Manufacturer's markings found atop the tripod attachment piece(see pics) NO serial number found at base and level positioned below the scope(indicating a pre-1900's model) From my research, I am confident that this is a very early(possibly 1st or 2nd, ever) model dating as far back as 1860. I also believe that it is one of, if not the largest/longest Gurley ever made(see below for dimensions and weight) I am pleased to be able to say that it is in shockingly superb used/vintage/antique condition with NO major defects whatsoever. This is a vintage surveying instrument and tri-pod. I believe it is a David White Meridian Level Transit Realist 8010. The research I did on it leads me to believe it is from the early 1930's The level's case has the kind of wear you would expect to see after years and years of use on the job. Also has what looks to be a driver's license number faintly engraved on the case. The tripod also shows plenty of use but is completely functional. Legs are approximately 59 inches long. Keuffel and Esser transit and tripod. I'm not an expert with transits but this one appears functional and well cared for. Nothing on the transit is magnetic. The case is solid and functional, it does have a dent on one side but this appears to be a manufacturing error. The sticker on the inside of the case reads No.NP5153 and serial No.175466. The tripod functions as it should, still nice and sturdy, adjusts from 35" to 58 1/2" Overall each piece is in good used condition showing normal wear from use and age.
