This Wild RDS Vertical Staff Tacheometer is designed for use with a vertical staff for tacheometric surveys and setting-out on construction sites. It can also be used as a normal theodolite. The RDS corresponds to the as a fully-fledged direct scale-reading instrument. With the normal stadia lines however, being replaced by very flat curves projected into the field of view. These flat reduction curves give a direct horizontal distance reading and a height difference involving no tables and only a simple mental multiplication. These readings are read directly as intercepts of a graduated vertical staff at one telescope pointing.

This listing is for a c1900 fine English theodolite transit made by Thoghton& Simms.The transit has a very long 13 1/2 inch or 34 cm telescope and measures 14 inches high at 36 cm to the top of the wheel. The instrument is stamped"THOUGHTON& SIMMS" on the front of the base. It is also stamped on the side with"MINING DEPARTMENT" and"THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS" The instrument is all brass and in it's original lacquer. Rather than my trying to try and explain all of this ... moreinstruments functions and capabilities I will depend on the many photographs to do that for me. suffice to say it is full of adjustments etc. There are 13 adjusting knobs. 4 small lens scopes for reading the two vernier gages and three spirit levels, etc etc, a very complicated and handsome instrument. All the levels vernier gages etc. are functioning. The optics are excellent and the instrument is again in it's original and unpolished finish. The mahogany box is in very good order and the leather strap although a bit dry, is complete and capable of carrying the box. I do not know whether there should be anything else in the box other than the spare eye piece which is there. The Theodolite itself appears complete and free from damage and or rust. It moves freely and can be focused although there is dust on the inside of the lenses that will need to be cleaned if it is to be used. We received this item with some other misc. surveying equipment from an estate sale. It doesn't have a brand name on it. But it is beautifully made with lots of nice knobs and adjustments. It was clearly very expensive and top of the line when manufactured. It has a rotary bearing in the base for swinging it around the horizontal and the cradle can be tilted up and down as shown in the pictures. There is some dirt, scratches and a little surface rust on the steel screw heads, but no significant damage. If this is an item you can use or adapt to your uses, then here is your chance.
