The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional ... morespot or unobtrusive mark in the margins of a few of the maps. The scanned images are un-edited(except for size) and are of the actual map you will receive. I've noticed that some of the scans look a little blurry or grainy. The map opens to a generous 23" x 44" and it depicts the world on an azimuthal equal-area projection. Solid red lines on the map show domestic and international airways then in service. As you may see in the scans below: The only transatlantic flights then in operation were between South America and Europe via Africa. When this map was printed. The North Atlantic still presented challenges for aviators due to weather and the huge distances involved, coupled with the lack of stopping points. Early transatlantic services, consequently, focused more on the South Atlantic, where the map shows two routes. But also shown with thin double lines are the stage routes, wagon trails and dirt roads in existence. To own any of these Business Atlas maps in the 1870's is to own a extremely rare item. The last one we saw in auction ran over $1400.00. And worldcat.org shows only one of these in the major libraries. This map is in great condition and was printed on good stock paper. See first scan. Original 1847 Steel Engraved Map- Railroad Routes Long Island RR& NY& Erie RR Fine Steel Engraving of Several New York Railroad Routes Map No. 15 shows rail routes that traveled from New York City in 1847. The Long Island Railroad traveled to Greenport. The New York& New Haven RR extended from the Harlem Railroad and traveled north past New Haven to Bridgeport Connecticut and ultimately was to form the route to Boston. The Harlem Railroad was in operation from New York City to Somers Town and was to be opened to Dover Plains in 1848. Map No. 16 shows the New York and Erie RR traveling from Piermont to the Delaware River. Please see the picture to see the actual area shown on these maps. The condition of the steel plate engraving is as shown in the high resolution scan. There are no tears. Repairs or damage affecting the image ... morearea. This plate has some age toning as should be expected. The paper is single sided with a pressed fold in the middle. Overall this 165 year old steel engraving is very fine condition.
