Up for auction is a vintage Zeiss Ikon Ikomat Model 520/18 folding camera. The camera is approximately 80 years old(Circa 1936) The German made Zeiss Ikomat and the Zeiss Ikonta cameras were produced between 1931 and 1938. They were the same camera. But there were several different variations of the camera, with the Ikomat being the older version and the Ikonta being the newer version or name for the camera. This camera is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Jena Nr 1301883 Tessar 1:3.5 f=5cm lens. The Tessar lens was the premium lens used by Zeiss on these cameras. While the sometimes used Novar lens was considered a budget lens. The camera I have listed here for auction not only had the premium Tessar lens. But came equipped with two viewfinders. The traditional telescopic viewfinder is located on the right side, or the bottom of the camera. The ... moresecond is located on the top of the camera. This second viewfinder is an openstyle fold frame viewfinder(Saw it called an Ikonometer with peep sight on one blog) This fold frame viewfinder with peep sight allows the photographer the same possible accuracy he would secure if looking through the ground glass back. The picture will be seen in the fold frame viewfinder in(Natural Size) assuring everything you see is in the viewfinder, will be in the actual picture. Both viewfinders are collapsible. 1950 Kiev II camera body, s/n 504313 - Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 1:2 f-5cm lens
A Kiev II. S/n 504313; this is an early, 1950 example of the Soviet copy(literally) of the Zeiss Contax II. The early years of the Kiev were fairly well made cameras. Many with parts from Germany, or at least tooled on the machines from Germany. There is some paint loss. And the leather is worn; only one small Zeiss-bump on the back. The chrome stood up well. There is a screw missing from the lens mount spring. Everything is there. Including a take-up spool, with functional( shutter(albeit very sluggish) and a nice bright and seemingly accurate rangefinder. The lens is a Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar. 1:2, f=5 cm, s/n 2200412, which should make it a 1937 lens. There are some cleaning marks on the lens, but no scratches or fungus. In light of her issues. She is offered as-is, for parts or repair.

Classic old lens. The glass looks excellent and clear. The aperture blades are dry and free of oil. The barrel has some scuff marks on it. What will have to be done is to have it serviced since the lube grease has gotten stiff from age making it difficult to focus and set the aperture. This has the Pentax screw thread mount( I had it on a Pentax Spotmatic F camera) The lens I believe was made in East Germany.

The optics look good. There appears to be bubbles where I think the lenses are cemented together at the factory. It does not affect the optics. These are uncoated lenses. They are not cloudy or scratched. The leather straps are dry rotting. The case strap is in two pieces now. Please study the images for the general idea of the condition. Serial Number 1.320,260 I think these were made in the mid 20's.

The optical quality of these Jena Contax lenses is generally found equal or better than their West-German versions. Both Jena and Oberkochen lenses were sold with Contax IIIa and IIa in the US. The optics are clean with no scratches on the lens surfaces or haze. Dust, or fungus inside. The aperture blades are free of oil and the mechanics works smoothly. The aluminum barrel has normal signs of wear. I have used this lens both on film cameras and on a digital Leica M9 with an adapter with excellent results. A solid pair of marked binoculars clearly dated 1918 as you can see in the pictures. Marks on right side are 1918 and D.F. 6 X 24 with the number 864173. Marks on the left are CARL ZEISS JENA. Zoom over the pictures to see the marks. First picture shows glasses with eye pieces adjusted all the way out. Second picture shows the other side. Third and 4th pictures show glass intact and the 5th pictures shows condition of the rubber around the eye pieces. They came with this black cord when we bought them. They have some of the black rubbed off but considering they are 96 years old they are in good condition. They measure about 4" tall with the eye pieces opened out full as shown in pictures 1 and 2. Di questa macchina ne furono prodotte diverse varianti. Il suo numero di matricola è V94307. Le sue condizioni estetiche. Nonostante l'età e la delicata finitura nera, sono molto buone. L'otturatore scatta e sembra funzionare correttamente. La lente è in ottime condizioni. Senza muffe o graffi, solo lievi e irrilevanti segni dovuti alla pulizia. Il contrasto del telemetro. Nonostante un pò di velatura interna è ancora molto buono. Buona la corsa dell'elicoidale di messa a fuoco. Regolare il blocco all'infinito.
