A nice edgelit display from KGM for GENERAL RADIO. The actual digit height is slightly under.75" There are 5 numeric digits. All light but the#9 in the second digit position glows dimly(probably a resistive connection somewhere? The digits all appear to light at about 12 Volts and give off a orange glow at this voltage(almost nixie-like) There is a bit of oxidation on the front screws(that hold the digits in place) but this should come off quite easily. The Bezel is very retro. Nice"industrial" look to it, but the digits easily come off the bezel if desired. Very nice. RARE! Edgelit Displays x 6, Wow!, Pre-Nixie Era, Great for Retro Clock, Very Rare!
You will not find any edgelit displays older than these; they are from an original NLS(Non Linear Systems) digital meter. NLS made the first digital meters EVER! Apologies for the crappy pictures; these displays are incredibly difficult to photograph. They have so much internal reflection that an autofocus camera gets confused. Very cool styling on the number"3" The picture shows 7 digits- here's the deal: There are 6 displays plugged into a motherboard but one of them is a units digit for displaying MV. KC, AC, OHMS, etc. The buyer can optionally keep this digit(making 5 digital digits and a units digit) or swap it for another digital display(6 digital digits- ideal for a clock project) I keep the unwanted digit. A quick check of the digits(which is easy to do with this motherboard) reveals that 2 or 3 are not lighting. This ... morecould be a bulb problem. Or a connection problem. The pictures show the how bright the digits are at 20Volts- the bulbs are probably rated at 24V. An ambitious clock designer will probably want to put LEDs in(run much cooler, last longer, and can have multi-colors) Actual digit height is approximately 2cm(~3/4" with the body of each readout roughly measuring 76mm x 27mm x 18mm(not including the protrusions of the mini-PCB at each end) You can see a couple of places on the front of the displays where the black anodizing(appears to be aluminum body) has been scraped off; most of this damage is on the units digit but there is a small scrape on another unit(easy to touch up I'm sure) Very nice. ONE PLANE READOUT x 4, PROJECTION TYPE, NIXIE TUBE ERA, GREAT FOR CLOCK PROJECT
Very rare ONE PLANE(Projection) display from INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS INC(IEE Inc) Essentially 11 small slide projectors projecting the images on a frosted screen! The actual digit height is exactly 24mm(just under an inch) The overall size of this unit is roughly: 6.375"W x 5.75"D x 2.5H" There are 4 numeric digit positions. Each position displays numerals from 0 to 9 and also has an additional unique RED highlighting(circle) projection. This is very cool for clock builders as it could be used as a cursor when setting the time. Or flashed/sequenced for alarms, etc. I did not check every bulb but I did notice that one of the RED lights was out. The 4 individual displays are held within a frame but I suppose they could be separated if you wanted to make a separate frosted screen for each(there is currently a single frosted ... morescreen for all 4 digits) The digit bulbs are all rated at 28 Volts. Could maybe replace with LEDs but that would defeat the purpose of retro. What sacrilege! I suppose that in the early days of Nixies and edgelit displays. The numerals were on separate planes which created parallax reading problems,etc. This projection technology boasted the fact that all digits were on the same plane, theus the name ONE-PLANE DIGITAL DISPLAY. Made by Hewlett Packard in 1969. This is a very unique, transistorized, thermometer style, readout! I do not have the schematic but I would guess these are decade counting units. the front bezels come off and the bulbs appear to be neon(as they have the pointed tip) The transistors are made by Texas Instruments and have HP part numbers on them; there are 8 transistors on each display board and they all have the same part number. I cannot guarantee this unit is functional so consider it as-is, no returns. There's nothing particularly hard-to-get on these units(other than maybe"original" transistors) so repairs should be easy. It's so unfortunate that there are only 5 digit positions. Maybe it could still make for a unique clock display? Very clean and nice. RARE!
