Enjoy our ... moreauction and come back soon. Offered is an Unmarked French Antique Lacquered Brass Field Drum Microscope from ca1850's. Additionally it is a Monocular Compound Achromatic Brass Microscope. The bottom of the body tube has two screw on and off lenses for adjustment of magnification. It features a bull's eye lens. The original Mahogony wood box, glass plates, and a period tweezer. It is 9" tall fully extended and has a 2 3/4" bottom diameter. I did clean up all the lens and provide a basic clean-up on the entire microscope with Windex only. Since it is unmarked. I was able to access a multitude of pictures and info concerning French Drum Microscopes, and I will share my research with you. I will provide four manufacturers' or instances of this type of microscope, to provide dating and provenance: 1. Charles Chevalier lived from 1804 to 1859. His 1848 microscope which can be found on Ebay. Is functionally similar to the instrument being offered, though not as sophisticated as far as features, and operational knob control. Since he worked through 1959, it was very possible that he added the features seen as he progressed from 1848 to 1959. 2. Construction No. 3 by Lerebours& Secretan. Ca1839-1855(designed and described by Lerebours alone in 1839 but not manufactured till 1855) Monocular Compound Achromatic Brass Microscope, height 10 1/5" Rack-and-pinion focusing, one bull's eye lens. It included a Mahogany wood box. This unit can be seen on the Internet and was valued at between $1,000- $2,000.00. 3. French Drum Microscope ca1865. Trade label of James Foster Jr. Mathematical& Philosophical Instrument Maker, Cinncinnati Ohio. This microscope can also be found on the Internet, and is is funtionally equivalent to the instrument being offered. The only difference is the bull's eye lens on a moveable arm is put in a different. 4. Als

The reservoir and chimney move up and down on the brass pillar as they should and its stay in place when the knurled bolt to the back is tightened. The porcelain chimney has a repaired section to one side, this feels sturdy, there is also some crazing discouloration and chips in places. The iron and brass work does have the usual scuffs, marks, tarnishing and scratches that you expect from a used item of this age. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. There are also the usual scuffs, marks, tarnishing and scratches that you expect from a used item of this age. The ring the drawtube screws in to is divided and it is a tight fit. The drawer tube moves up and down when the knurled bolt to the lower tube is moved, however, it is a little loose and doesn't stay in place.

The brass arm that attaches to the ring on the reservoir neck appears to have been reattached at some point, but it does feel sturdy. The brass chimney fits in to its' holder nicely, but this has tarnished. There are three glass diffusers, these fit in to the front of the chimney. The brass work does have the usual scuffs, marks, tarnishing and scratches that you expect from a used item of this age.

This is not one of the miniature toy microscopes, with cheap lenses and plastic parts, but a full size heavy metal microscope made to last forever. It's called a student microscope because many were used in high schools. The lenses look very good. There are two objectives that screw into the turret and two eyepieces. Turret holds two standard objectives. There are 4 power combinations with the included lenses. Cabinet in good condition except the lock is missing from the back. Still has the key and the special bolt that holds the Microscope to the cabinet and its special wrench. Drawer fits inside cabinet. When I plugged it in, it did not come on, so if it is a light module, the bulb is probably burned out. Also, on one side of this device someone used liquid paper to write"MEM. HOSP. on it. Or adjustments, but I will leave that part for you. For your consideration is this very neat vintage SPI Microscope Model 1835 encased in its own seven drawer wood cabinet. Starting with the cabinet. Made with finger joints, steel carrying handle, a microscope compartment, and seven drawers. The cabinet is well made and surprisingly clean for its age. Contents; About 20 Glass Slides, 6 Prepared Slides(Japan) 2 Spare Bulbs, Glass Eyedropper, Sealed Case of Slide Holders, additional slide attachment, 10x Lens, ... more20x Lens, Knife, Tweezers, Paddle Instrument, Needle Instrument, 110V Power Supply, Three Wax Sealed Prepared Liquids(Japan) I know nothing about them, but it appears to be a real nice microscope. All seem quite exceptional to me with the following exceptions. One of the prepared liquids has hardened, the power supply jack seems a bit of a loose fit, the shape of the battery holders seems a bit odd and I did not have matching batteries on hand to test the light. This is a vintage dissecting or stereo microscope 1.5x objective lens. Measures app. 31.8 mm in overall height while the base is 54.7 mm long. The edges of the base are beveled for sliding into the mounting slot and measures 20.8 mm at the wide edge of the bevel and 17.6 mm at the narrow edge of the bevel. The handle is not in the best shape, but other than a few worn corners the case itself is in good condition. This 43 page. Paper bound Catalog, has illustrations, descriptions, charts and price lists for Bausch& Lomb microscopes, and other optical aides for hospital and general medical use. There is also 2 paper suppliments featuring Bausch& Lomb Photographic Lenses and Accessories(8 pages long) and a Low Power Projection Microscope, which is a 1 fold pamphlet. The Catalog has a fragile spine. There is a 3 inch tear and the paper at the binding is dry and brittle. There is also a slight crease in the Catalog, from top to bottom, and some of the pages at the back of the book have light corner creases.

It is made from polished satinwood. The polished satinwood case is divided into compartments both in the base and inside the lid. And comes with a number of plain glass slides. It has a heavy steel base and brass features, some tarnish and scratches. The base measures about 4-1/4" wide and 6" long and& 11-1/ 4" at it s lowest height. The eye pi ece has a number 10 on it.
