Up for auction is an antique western lumber trade token from Feather Falls. California, in Butte County, This is a very historical area for both timber and gold. It is located 25 miles north of Oroville. The town was originally called Mooretown. It was founded in the 1850's by John S. Moore of North Carolina. It had a thriving start. Primarily in gold mining at first but eventually branched out to lumber; there were some orchards in the area as well- there is still an old Walnut orchard just outside town. The founder of the town was murdered in 1886 after a night drinking and gambling. The town's name was changed to Feather Falls in the 1920's after the Hutchinson Lumber company. In 1938 they were able to secure a Federal Reconstruction Finance Corporation loan and built a new sawmill at Mooretown(now known as Feather Falls) The ... moreformer logging railroad became the common carrier Feather River Railway on May 24. 1940. From July 1940 to July 22, 1955 the Feather River Railway operated as a common carrier. Resumption of lumbering operations again provided employment for Oroville, although not on the scale of the operations in the early 1920’s. Mr. Land organized National Wood Treating Company as a subsidiary in 1947. The plant was located in South Oroville. Feather River Pine Mills continued operations until 1955 when the Land and Cooper families sold the company to Georgia-Pacific Corporation. California located in Siskiyou County McCloud served as the center of operations for the McCloud River Lumber Company. Except for the brief existence of the Ash Creek Mill. All commercial sawmilling activities done by the company were handled at the McCloud mill. The original George mill, located on what is today the southeast edge of town, remained in operation until 1919, when a new sawmill was built on the northeast edge of town. This sawmill complex was expanded greatly through the years, eventually becoming one of the biggest sawmills ever to operate in the state of California. Daily production of the mill through most of its history exceeded half a million board feet.At it's height, the McCloud River Lumber Company owned or ... morecontrolled over 600,000 acres of timberland, almost all of which was located east of town. The company had extensive logging operations that produced the logs needed to keep the sawmill running, along with an extensive railroad system connecting the woods operations with the mill. Some of the railroad system was owned and operated by the McCloud River Railroad Company, but the vast majority of the railroad operation were owned by the lumber company. The lumber company initially used small portable log camps that were used to house the loggers that worked in the woods. These camps were constantly on the move. Following the harvest operations as they worked through the woods. However, in 1927 the company transitioned to larger, permanent communities, with the loggers being transported to the cutting sites. The first of these camps to be established, and the longest to remain in operation, was Pondosa. Pondosa was established in 1927 and remained in operation until 1964. Up for auction is an old antique lumber trade token from Tacoma. Washington( WA) located in Pierce County. In 1924. The third Pacific Match Company opened. This one was founded by O. V. Snyder and associates, who had relocated to Tacoma from Wheeling, WV, where he had apparently worked in the match industry previously. This company had much more success than the previous two. It would last 40 years. By 1953. The company was one of Tacoma‟s major industries and employed 150 people at its 20-acre plant, producing 80 million matches a day. At one point, when Canada‟s Eddy Match Co. closed its British Columbia plant, the Pacific Match Company was the only manufacturer left in North America that used pine for its matches instead of aspen or cottonwood. Up for auction is an antique trade token from the old lumber town of Longview. Washington located in Cowlitz County. Longview was first settled in 1849. In 1918 the Long-Bell Lumber Company led by Missouri timber baron Robert A. Long, decided to move his operation out to the west coast and he made a decision to buy a great expanse of Timberland in Cowlitz County. A total of 14,000 workers were needed to run the two large mills as well as lumber camps that were planned. The number of workers needed was more than a lumber town, Long planned and built a complete city in 1921 that could support a population of up to 50,000 and provide labor for the mills as well as attracting other industries. A postally unused card may have writing on the reverse This exceptionally sharp and clear image shows a view of. HORSE DRAWN WAGON FILLED WITH A LOAD OF LUMBER, TWO MEN POSING FOR THE VIEW. Card publisher/photographer not indicated The overall condition is as seen. As grading is subjective. Please look at scan for faults/defects. Any diamond grid pattern or red, green or other stripe effects on the right hand side of the card, are scanning flaws. They are not on the card. HISTORY MATTERS! Snapshots of the Past. The vogue of lithographed cards caught Eastman-Kodak's attention. They issued an affordable"Folding Pocket Kodak" camera around 1906. This allowed the mass public to take black& white photographs ... moreand have them printed directly onto paper with postcard backs. Various other models of Kodak"postcard" cameras followed igniting a real photo postcard era. These cameras shared two neat features: their negatives were postcard size(the major reason why so many of these images are so clear) and they had a small thin door on the rear of their bodies that. When lifted, enabled the photographer to write an identifing caption or comment on the negative itself with an attached metal scribe. This is the reason that so many of the earlier photo cards are"one of a kind" Early on professional photographers capitalized on the new craze and themselves captured images that they printed on the processing papers that were being made available by a number of companies at the time. They advertised their ability to make as many copies as you liked from your negatives. As the decades passed and new technologies developed. It became even more common for commercial photographers to mass-produce and market these real photo postcards, which reached their zenith in the 1940's. The address had to be written on the right side of the back of the postcard while the left side was reserved for writing messages. Most postcards were printed in Germany, the world leader in lithographic processes. Then at the height of this country wide mania, WWI began. It brought with it.
