Here we have a beautiful oval basket with a carved medallion on the lid that was purchased at a recent Maine estate sale. The basket a rich brown color and is in perfect condition with no breaks or stains. The light areas you see in some photos are from the camera flash reflection. The lighter spots in the medallion are actually in the medallion itself and are not stains. The carving in the medallion looks like two love birds sitting on a tree limb surrounded by leaves and flowers. We are not sure of what kind of material the medallion is made of. The basket measures 7.25 inches wide by 8.25 inches long and 3.50 inches tall. Vintage ? Miniature Hand Painted Woven Splint Basket Made In China
Up for auction is a miniature hand painted woven basket. I am not sure of it's age. But it has a very nice patina. It is stamped"MADE IN CHINA" on the bottom. It has blue hand painted flowers with green leaves on all four sides, and worn blue paint around the top edge. As seen in the close up photos above, there is a small dark spot on the inside of the basket, otherwise, it is in very nice condition. It is about 4 1/8" wide and 2 5/8" high. Intricate Braided Sweet Grass & Splint Gilbey Bottle Basket New England Indian
This is a stunning bottle basket from one of the tribes in the Northeast area. Possibly the Penobscot, who are known for their beautiful use of sweet grass. This large, heavy bottle measuring 11" tall and 5 1/4" wide has a metal cap stating W& A Gilbey. The basket maker used ash splints to form the basket and then added hundreds of strands of braided sweet grass from bottom to top. At the base and the shoulder area are huge braids of sweet grass held in place with thicker ash splints; there is another smaller bundle of sweet grass bound in place around the rim. The sweet grass has a nice dark patina from age, so I would expect that this bottle is probably early 1900's. The condition is excellent. This is a great example of a weaver's skill and creativity! Fancy Splint Handkerchief Hanky Northeast Indian Basket with Frog Handle
This lovely basket was made by a talented weaver of one of the tribes of the northeast U.S. Constructed as a souvenir basket meant to hold a lady's handkerchiefs. It has an ash splint foundation interwoven with Hong Kong cord. The use of this cord dates the basket to between 1920 and 1940. I love the cheerful colors the weaver used to dye the ash splints and they remain bright even after all these years. The weaver went the extra mile and added a fancy handle to the lid, called a"frog" handle. This stunning basket measures 6" x 6" and stands about 3" tall. It's in fantastic condition with the exception of just a couple missing rim stitches in two corners of the lid. This type of fancy basket is becoming harder to find and would make a stunning addition to any collection.

Large Fancy Vintage Mohawk Indian Splint Ash & Sweetgrass Sewing Basket
Up for auction is a beautifully woven vintage splint ash and sweetgrass Indian sewing basket with sweetgrass rims. This is a nicely woven lidded basket made by the Mohawk. One of the Northeast Indian tribes from New York and Canada. The basket's weaver wove the basket from narrow ash splints, using row upon row of tiny sweetgrass braids and finely split strands of sweetgrass as weavers on the lid and on the sides. This would have been made for the tourist market in the middle years of the past century, and would have been purchased by a tourist lady with a lot of sewing. Then, to further gild the lily, the weaver added in rows of tight twists on the lid and around the lower edge, and added a fancy looped handle on the lid. Twists like this are a hallmark of the Mohawk tribe. The basket is old enough to have developed the beginnings of ... morea nice aged patina. A very attractive and fancy large Indian sewing basket! The basket is a nice large size. Perfect for a showy display, measuring a full 10¾" in diameter and 5" deep to the top of the slightly rounded lid, with the ash handle adding another inch and a half to its height. This beautiful basket is in just PRISTINE condition, with no breaks or any other damage. Every one of the tight twists is intact and unbroken, and the handle is in perfect shape and is still firmly attached. Rare to find one of these decorated baskets in such great shape. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. This is an attractive authentic Mohawk Indian basket from the past century, and it will make a terrific addition to someone's collection. Old Antique RIBBED SPLINT BASKET Fixed Handle LARGE
We purchased this ribbed gathering basket at the Indiana Antiques Show in Indianapolis in the early 1980's. It is a juried show and supposedly reputable. We do not know. However, how old the basket is. It has minimal wear to the handle, one broken weaver and some stains. It has a raised central rib on the interior. The wood may be ash or hickory. I do not think it is oak. As the wood grain is quite fine. The dimensions across the top are approximately13" long x 12" wide x 7" high. Excluding the fixed handle. It's super nice and as you can see- thick! It measures 30" long tip to tip and 4.5" wide. The hardware has some rust. But doesn't affect the item. These have been cleaned too. I'm also tossing in a pair of cotton reins with scissor snaps. Super soft cotton. They were frayed at the end so I braided it. Also a nice pair of Bar F Splint boots size Medium. Set of 3 Vintage Splint Cane Rectangular Nesting Baskets, Footed
This auction is for a set of 3 vintage splint cane nesting baskets. They are all footed and rectangular in shape but are not perfectly rectangle. The largest basket measures 18 1/2" long by 9 1/2" wide by 4 1/4" high. Not including handle. Including handle, the height is approximately 12" The medium basket is 16" long by 7" wide by 3 1/2" high(about 10" to top of handle) The smallest basket is 12 3/4" long by 6" wide and is 3 1/8" high(9" to top of handle) The largest basket as a little cane loose at one end but it goes right back into place. It is not broken off, just pulled loose. This is shown in last picture; overall these baskets are nice condition. They have beautiful patina, wonderful for decorating and have many practical uses. It was woven by a Native American of the New England area, most likely Micmac, about 100 years ago. Vintage PENOBSCOT INDIAN SWEET GRASS& SPLINT COVERED BASKET Native American An old splint& sweet grass basket with cover made by the Penobscot Indians. Ca. 1920’s-1940’s. The splint was dyed in colors of green and red. It stands 3” tall with the lid in place and the lid measures about 6-3/4” in diameter. The color of the splint on the upper part of the exterior and lid has faded over time. It has one small white stain on the lid(see pictures below) which we have not attempted to remove and it may remove easily otherwise there is no damage. Antique vintage wood splint picnic basket fixed handle
Very old picnic basket with divided top covers in fair/ good condition. Some damage/ losses on top covers near center of each side. Two small pieces of string hold one side on. This is a very old basket. Possibly late 1800's, early 1900's. Measures 9 inches high, 13 inches to top of handle. 15 1/2 inches wide, across top, and base measures 7 X 11 inches. Few slight losses on each side, but otherwise a nice old basket with lots of character.
