A beautifully aged late 19th/early 20th century"fancy basket" Made by the native Wabanaki tribes of Maine. This large brown ash splint basket has a curlicue weave which is distinctive to Maine Indian basket making. Skillfully woven for food use with wide rounded top and nicely footed base. Minor splint loss. No repairs. Overall untouched as found condition. Great original dark color. 12 inches across. Stands 6 1/4 inches.

Outstanding early Woodlands Indian Black Ash splint Indian basket with hand carved handles. This basket measures 15" X 8" X 9" wide. The basket is in good used condition with some missing and broken splints consistent with age. Some of the splints were dyed in a vegetal red typical of early baskets and has faded into a rose color muted by time. I am not seeing baskets of this age much anymore and this is definitely one of the better baskets that I have seen available. Shipping is $15.99.

Vintage Cherokee Indian Splint Oak & Honeysuckle Sewing Basket w/ Qualla Tag
Up for auction is a beautifully crafted medium-large sized Southeastern Cherokee Indian splint oak and honeysuckle sewing basket. It is a full-sized sewing basket and has terrific detailing. With its even splints and its nice rounded tapered shape. The basket features a bentwood oak frame, and honeysuckle weavers form the rim and the body of the basket. The lid is rounded with a wrapped oak loop handle. The weaver added in stripes of natural walnut dye as accents. This is a vintage basket, with a nice aged patina. Amazingly, the basket retains its original Qualla tag, identifying it as the work of Emily McCoy of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee tribe. This beautifully woven Cherokee Indian basket will make a terrific addition to someone's collection. The basket. As noted, is a nice largish size, made to actually hold sewing items. It ... moremeasures 8" across at the widest point on the rounded sides, and 6½" deep to the top of the rounded lid, with the little wrapped oak handle adding another half inch or so. The basket is in outstanding condition, with no breaks, cracks, or missing weavers, including on the rim. The Qualla tag has turned brown with age and has a crease but is otherwise intact. See photos, as they give a true picture of its features and condition. It's a very nice vintage Cherokee splint oak and honeysuckle basket, which makes a beautiful piece for display. Large Old Great Lakes Indian Splint Ash Vegetable Basket w/ Elaborate Handle
Up for auction is a beautifully woven old Great Lakes Indian splint ash vegetable or gathering basket. Possibly from Wisconsin or right here in Michigan. We do know it is from the Great Lakes area because no sweetgrass was used in its construction. This basket has all the bells and whistles that an experienced weaver could add. It has an unusual bentwood handle made with three ash splints, interwoven with ash and tapering toward the center. Very attractive! The basket also has a bentwood rim double-wrapped with ash splints, and if you turn the basket upside down, you can see a twisted ash"foot" for the basket to rest on. The basket is old enough to have developed a nice patina, and on the inside you can still see traces of the pretty colors the weaver used to decorate her creation. And if you look carefully at the center of the ... moreunderside, you can still see faintly in pencil the basket's original sales price: $4.50. Wow! This splint ash basket. As noted, is a nice large size, big enough to actually tote your vegetables if desired. It measures a whopping 13" across and 7½" deep- 14½" tall to the top of the handle. This beautiful basket is in really nice condition for its age, which I estimate to be from around 1950 or so. The only damage worth noting is the rim which is missing wraps in two places, but this is the only real exception. Some dirt smudges on the inside, but I really don't consider that a flaw. The basket's elaborate handle is in perfect shape, as is the foot on the underside, and all the ash splints on the sides are intact. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. This large Great Lakes Indian ash basket displays very well and will make a terrific addition to someone's collection. Beautiful antique basket hand woven with carved wooden swivel handle. Top opening measures 13" x 11" It's 10 inches tall. Not including handle. Bottom measures 10" x 9 1/2" The wooden handle is hand carved with amazing. Intricate detail. This basket may be of Winnebago origin. But I'm not sure. It's not signed. I found a similar basket with the same style handle that was identified as Wisconsin Winnebago tribe. Some of the splints are broken. There is some wire holding part of the top splints together. Marvelous Vintage Native American Sweet Grass Ash Splint Yarn/ Knitting Basket from Maine. C. 1900-1920 Up for auction is a beautifully made woven yarn basket by Native Americans in Maine for the tourist trade in the early 1900s. The woven ash splint and sweet grass makes a lovely design of balance and the two sweet grass handles makes it easy for carrying your knitting from place to place. The lid would keep a ball of yarn in the basket while the hole in the middle of the lid would allow the strand to come out as needed while a person was knitting. Although the outside color has faded with age. The interior has retained its original colored splints of red, green and blue. The basket has a wonderful golden patina from age(see photos) The basket is still very tight and in very good condition and the handles are sturdy. However. Some of the ... morenarrow splint that held the decorative base of one handle end has broken off, leaving the twisted sweet ash loose(see photos#2, 3 and#9) Also. So here for your consideration is a nice vintage Northeast Algonquin lidded storage basket, woven of fine ash splints, with traditional sweetgrass trim at the lid edge. Measures 7-1/2 inches high by 7-1/2 inches diameter, base is square with"cat's ear" corners. Made by the Penobscot Indians in Maine. This old twine basket measures around 8 1/2 inches tall and the diameter of the top opening is 5 1/2. The top has a hole in the center for yarn or twine. Very colorful inside withgreen and orange/pink. But the outside is faded and you see mostly tan with a hint of the other colors. It has some damage to the lid as you can see in the last two photos. Some of the braid around the top has come undone so check out the pictures. I am offering this at a low price because of that. But the bottom is quite nice.

The basket is made of Sweet Grass and Ash Splint I believe. This is a really colorful pretty basket with nicely woven design incorporating sweet grass and dyed reeds of green and natural and a very colorful dark pink or magenta. These baskets were made by the Penobscot or another closely related N.E. Tribe- this one is of a more recent vintage- very good to excellent original condition. Overall it looks to be in excellent condition- I can't see any missing or broken splints and it looks like it was never even used. The basket has a covered lid with a decorated ring and is approximately 5" tall to the top of the lid and approx 7.75" ... morediameter at top and the base is approx 5" wide. Click Here. Double your traffic. Get Vendio Gallery This is a beautifully preserved basket. 9" by 8" at the top, 5 1/2" by 3 1/2 square at the bottom, by about 12" high, including handle. I do not know the maker, but is typical of East Coast Native American baskets. It has a wooden handle, carved and notched, a darker rim wrap that could be swabbed with dye or bluing, but not sure. Construction is a rectangle base that morphs into an oval st the top. Every other vertical splint is folded over to the inside. The basket has a lovely dark patina and is in very good condition, unusual for work baskets of this age and type. It is a quality basket worthy of preservation and display. The handle is notched and smooth with a nice patina. The curlicues are all perfect but one has a tiny drop of green paint on it. One thin strip of the ash is broken at the base which is hard to see unless you are looking very thoroughly. About 6" high with the handle. 5" diameter at the top opening. When looking at the cliques under a bright light you can see evidence of red dye which has faded. Displays great and in near MINT condition. There is NO RESERVE. Please see all 6 pictures. Please.
