Fine and Unusual Penobscot Indian Egg-Shaped Splint Ash Gift Basket
This one is so nice! Up for auction is a beautifully small woven splint ash Indian gift basket or possibly a Christmas ornament. The basket was made in an unusual egg shape. And opens to hold a small gift. The basket was made by a talented weaver from the Penobscot, one of the New England tribes, who were the most innovative of the New England tribes in inventing new types of baskets to tempt the tourists. The basket has a series of orange twists around the center and a pair of stripes of orange with narrow glittery cording. An inner collar keeps the two halves aligned. The basket has a deep yellow silk ribbon for the basket to hang from, with little bows both top and bottom. The ash splints composing the sides are very narrow, only about 1/16" across. It's a beauty! The basket measures 2¼" across at the widest point on ... morethe rounded sides. And 3½" deep to the top of the pointed lid- about a 10" drop to the top of the silk ribbon. I am pleased to tell you that the basket itself is in just pristine condition with no breaks or any other damage. The fancy decorations and the rim wraps are all in place. The only issue is that the silk ribbon has deteriorated over the passing of the years. This fact leads me to believe that this basket is older than it would first appear. This is an attractive and unusual vintage Penobscot Indian basket, and it will make an outstanding addition to someone's collection. Offered is an Vintage Handmade Penobscot Yarn Basket of Sweet Grass. Ash Splints& Braided Cord. This basket probably dates mid-century and is in EXCELLENT Condition. The basket with lid measures 8 inches high and approximately 7.75 inches in diameter. It has two handles of braided cord and an attached lid which peaks in the center. The dyed ash splints that have been exposed to light have faded but are still remarkably vibrant both on the outside AND inside of the basket. Overall condition is EXCELLENT with no broken splints. Antique Primitive Doctors Hand-Carved Wooden Splint (Military?)
Offered- A very unique Primitive Eastern Tennessee Wooden Doctors Splint. I have had this Splint for many years and have basically used it as a wood-sculpture as it is a very attractive piece. When I bought this piece I was told that it originated in Eastern Tennessee and that it was made from Tennessee Maple. I was also told that it was hand-made and that it had a Military Connection. The Splint is 22 1/2 inches in length- from the bottom of the foot rest to the top of the calf. The wooden screws under the foot rest add another 3 to 4 inches depending on their setting. The foot rest is approx. 10 inches long- I wear a size 9 shoe and my foot fits very comfortably on the piece. I am assuming that the foot rested on the foot rest- with the calf against the back of the splint and then the leg was wrapped in-order to keep the leg in place. The ... morewooden screws under the foot rest would have been used to tighten or ease the tension of the leg- depending on the individuals height. Both of the screws work very well. On the top of the back side there are three screw holes- I do not know what these were for- But I have used them to hand the piece. This is a beautifully constructed one-of-a-kind piece. White and blue beads. I personally have never seen another like them though I'm sure they are out there. It must have taken a lot of time to do all the bead work. Unusual Old Maine Indian Splint Ash & Sweetgrass Wall Pocket Basket
Up for auction is a beautifully woven splint ash. Cording, and sweetgrass Indian wall pocket basket with sweetgrass rims wrapped with ash. The basket was made in an unusual oblong shape, and was intended to hang on the wall to hold combs or other personal items. The basket was made by a talented weaver from one of the New England tribes, who were the most innovative in inventing new types of baskets to tempt the tourists. Be sure to check out the sweetgrass rims, the braided cording handle held in place with little bow knots, and also the row upon row of hong kong cording the weaver chose to accent her creation. The use of this type of cording dates the basket to the 1930's. The original green color is somewhat faded, but still visible on the back of the basket where it hung against the wall. It's a beauty! The basket measures 8½" ... morex 5" across at the rim. And 7" deep with the cording handle adding another 2" to its height. If you look carefully at the rim, you can find a spot of damage on one side, but this is the only damage on this old basket. Aside from that one flaw, this basket has no breaks or any other damage. The handle is still firmly attached on both sides, and there are no other problems. This is an attractive and unusual vintage New England Indian basket, and it will make an outstanding addition to someone's collection. VINTAGE LARGE ASH SPLINT HAMPER BASKET WITH LID 25" TALL CHIPPEWA OR PENOBSCOT
Up for bid is a very tall and large sturdy beautiful black ash hamper basket. The dimensions are 27" Tall x 15" wide. The rim is 10" diameter. The bottom is approximately 10" square and is woven in the twill pattern. The lid is 12" in diameter x 3" high. It has two ash handles on the side of the basket. I got this basket from an elderly couple from Minnesota that are in there 80's and they have had it in there collection for quite a few years. They bought it in Minnesota or Michigan way back when and are snowbirding down South and brought it with them. The style looks very similar to the work of a Saginaw Chippewa basketmaker named John Nahgahqwon(1913-1995) The last pic above is a basket that John made in 1978. Compare the similarities to this basket. I don't know if John made this one or not. And I ... moream not saying he did, but the style is very similar. Pics are made from the top, bottom, and all sides. The lid has a decorative curl on top with an interwoven handle. The lid has 32 spokes, no broken weavers. Solid rim and weavers. On the basket itself, there are no broken weavers. The dyed weavers have faded. Baskets this size and style don't come along very often. I don't know the age of this basket. Up for auction is a well-crafted vintage Cherokee Indian splint oak gift basket or berry basket. It has beautiful detailing. With its walnut and bloodroot stripes on the sides which are still nicely visible and very little faded. The basket also features oak-wrapped rims, and a bentwood oak frame. The bentwood oak handle goes right around to the underside for extra stability and is held in place with one of the unique Cherokee locking splints. The basket came with a hand-written note, stating that it was purchased at the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina in 1973- unusual to be able to date a vintage basket this precisely. This beautifully woven Cherokee Indian splint oak basket will make a terrific addition to someone's collection. The basket is a nice small-medium size for one of these Cherokee baskets. Lack of flexibility in the calf muscles is the most common cause of heel pain, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and Achilles tendonitis. Night splints can be used in the evening to improve calf muscle flexibility. They can also be used during sleep to prevent night-time contracture of the calf muscle so that the first few steps in the morning are not painful. Why do night splints help? Night splints are intended for improving calf muscle flexibility which is important for plantar fasciitis(heel spurs) Achilles Tendinitis, and other foot and ankle conditions. When calf muscles are not flexible, the foot does not bend up towards the knee as easily. They differ slightly in size- the larger one being approx. 4-1/4" long x 7/8" wide, at the center. All the edges are smooth. Except the pointed corners of the adjustable bands/shanks. This auction is for a Lot of three Bradford Baskets. There were owned by a basket collector. They are all double woven maple splint baskets. The natural basket measures 6 inches wide by 6 inches long and 3 inches deep and is dated 2000 signed Bradford Basket Company Hand Woven USA with the initials of the maker KAG. The other two baskets are natural and have navy blue running through them. The small one is 5 1/4 long 3 1/2 wide and 2 1/4 deep it also has leather handles. The other natural and blue is 5/12 high and 4 1/2 wide. These baskets are also marked Bradford Basket Company USA and are signed DKS 2000. Two of the baskets still have Bradford hang tags on. Velcro is still very good, holds tight. There is some cracking at the bottom of one boot. Same one has a good crack/rip. The other boot has the beginning of a crack in the same place. Both have the logo, DOVER SADDLERY" on the top inside. Measurements: 9 1/2 inches long on the inside, 6 3/4 long on the outside. Great pair of usable, working boots. This is an auction for an original old splint wood berry farm basket with original wire bale handles and stapled horizontal banding. This primitive basket is made with 2.75” vertical slats and a large 4” wide horizontal band around the entire basket. It is in very good condition with no gaping holes in the wood slats. But it does have a.5” frayed area on one side to the horizontal band(shown) other than that it is in great condition. The basket stands 6” high, to the top of the wire handle is 8.5” The basket is 18” long and 9” wide.
