Vintage Rug Beater Made from Three Strands of Braided No. 9 Wire w/ Wood Handle
For your consideration is a vintage rug beater. This rug particular rug beater has 0 writing. However I have seen similar rug beaters and rug beaters from competeing manufacturers; all rug beaters with patent dates were patented from 1915-1930. This particular rug beater is made from three strands of No. 9 wire that is loosely braided. All ends are concealed by being inserted into a turned wooden handle. To use a rug beater, the rug was taken outside and hung froma clothes line. The user gripped the wooden handle and beat on the rug with the braided wires until 0 dust came from the rug. The rug was then taken indoors and put in its desired place. This rug beater has a total length of approximately 31" the wooden handle is approximately 4 3/4" long and a maximum width of approximately 6 1/4" This rug beater is OK like it is, ... morehowever the wooden handle is weathered and should be sanded and finished as desired. Because of the way it was used, on one side of the braided wire is flatter than the other side; I do not know what could be done about this.
