Scholarly debate has long focused on the traditional attribution of the work to the mysterious Trotula. Said to have been the first female professor of medicine in eleventh or twelfth-century Salerno, just south of Naples, then the leading center of medical learning in Europe. Yet as Monica H. Green reveals in her introduction to this first edition of the Latin text since the sixteenth century, and the first English translation of the book ever based upon a medieval form of the text, the"Trotula" is not a single treatise ... morebut an ensemble of three independent works, each by a different author. To carrying degrees, these three works reflect the synthesis of indigenous practices of southern Italians with the new theories, practices, and medicinal substances coming out of the Arabic world. Surgeon-in-Chief to the Free Hospital for Women, Brookline’ Consulting Physician to the Boston Lying-in Hospital. This book was published by W.B. Saunders Company. Philadelphia and London in 1928. It is identified as a 4th edition. Thoroughly revised. The book has 408 half-tone and pen drawings by the author and 153 microscopic drawings by Margaret Concree and Ruth Huestis with 128 of the illustrations in color. Also with the book is a W.B. RARE Antique Medical Obstetric Phantom Gynecology Baby Doll Fetal Teaching Aid
I am pleased to offer this evening an incredibly rare obstetric model of a baby made from chamois leather. Used for teaching purposes, with attached umbilical cord and placenta. The head has features(mouth. Nose, eye sockets, anterior and posterior fontanelles) identifiable by palpation. Student doctors and midwives were expected to feel the baby’s head within an artificial pelvis and identify the type of presentation. All steps of childbirth may have been practiced by student using this doll. Hence the scarcity of existing examples today: very, very few survived years of continuous hands-on use(and abuse! Back when I was collecting medical antiques. I considered this the"holy grail" and could not believe my good fortune when I was able to finally acquire one of these! Alas, my interest in the medical arts has waned, and I shall ... morenow reluctantly release this back into the world for someone else to care for and enjoy! The condition is absolutely phenomenal; much MUCH better than might be expected considering its age(which is approximate. I believe sometime between 1900 and 1920) Appears to have received only minimal handling! The chamois is quite clean and very soft and pliable. With some slightly darker scuffing around the hands and feet. In person, the doll is a bit lighter than the photos. the photos show it a bit darker and yellower than it appears in person. There are no tears to the leather, though shortly after acquiring, I re-stitched about 3/4" of seam on the front of the left arm where it meets the shoulder(pictured close-up) where the original thread had come loose. It is not noticeable, and I really only mention because that open seam allowed me to see that the body appears to be stuffed primarily with horsehair. There are many"bones" cardboard of some sort I presume? present throughout the body. legs. Ribcage, all of the bones of the skull, etc. and the head is weighted exactly as a real baby's is. It is about 18 1/4" tall. I have only seen one of these available in my

ANTIQUE CHILD INFANT VAGINAL SPECULUM 1920 steel gynecology vintage medical tool
This is a child's or infant's speculum by the Sklar Co. of Pennsylvania. Circa 1920. It's stainless steel and in exceptionally good condition. The Sklar Co. is a manufacturer of OB/GYN supplies and has been making speculums for over 120 years! This speculum has a bill that's 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" the handle and end of the bill is 4 3/4" long. That is extremely small for a speculum. So this piece is VERY rare. It's also rare because of its age and the fact that it's stainless steel; speculums are increasingly made of plastic as time goes on, and the non-disposable steel ones such as this have been all but phased out of professional medical use. This is partially the result of the discovery of HIV/AIDS and the resulting fear of sterilizable, potentially reusable medical tools. Disposable plastic speculums are ... moreused nowadays. The sensational aspect of this piece is the fact that it was intended for use in the vaginal exam of an infant or small child! It features a wide-view design with a large opening to allow for the introduction of instruments or tubes into the vagina. A child's or infant's speculum such as this one is very rarely used in professional medical practice because it's much too small for an adult virgin and speculums are generally not used in pediatric exams anyway.think about it. Perhaps it was more common in the past. It's considered to be too traumatic for both the child and the parent to experience. It can also unnecessarily stretch or break the hymen. My mother has been a doctor for over 30 years and she's never even seen a modern child's or infant's speculum and hasn't even heard of one being used. Up for auction I have this very old and possibly primitive blown glass urinal. This urinal has no measurement scale or any marks and looks as if it was not mass produced but made by hand with care one at a time with many bubbles in the glass. I usually would not deal in this kind of collectable but this really caught my eye because it just looks like something that someone would like to have in a medical collection.
