Welcome to the new Trout Underground!

By Tom Chandler 4/22/2006

It's official! (well, as official as it gets here at the Underground). Welcome to the new Trout Underground blog site. I've moved 90% of the content to the new site (still looking for a home for Cool Eddy) and you can find all that content on this blog's "static pages" (see the navigation links to your right or use the buttons across the very top of the page).

You'll notice that you can now post comments in response to my posts. In order to keep comment "Spam" to a minimum (yup, spammers target blogs too), you'll need to log in to comment, but it's a seconds-long process and rest assured we'll never sell your e-mail address to evil spam slime.I know the new site isn't quite as funky as the old one, but it offers the ability to make the readers part of the process (with comments). I might also get a little help with new posters from time to time.

Don't hesitate to report any weird behavior (on the site's part, not mine) to me by clicking on the "emailTC" button on the sidebar. And don't forget to enjoy the Trout Underground (remember, we're here to have fun...)

BTW - while we were looking for a beverage suitable for the grand opening celebration
, we stumbled on this little gem from Moldy Chum. Drink hearty, save a reef.

See you anywhere but behind a keyboard, Tom Chandler

Dale; I think you hit the nail on the head with your statement about the NorCal board where the "moderation is a bit lax." Moderating a board takes time, and right now I'm re-tooling my professional writing business, fishing a little, writing this blog, traveling to Tennessee and conducting slaw dog/burrito comparisons, and (oh yeah) staying married to the LT Nancy... I just don't think I'm up for ... more the hassle. My hope is to expand the core of writers/contributors here, and eventually add a "diaries" feature. I really appreciate your thoughts on this idea and it's not like it has wholly escaped my attention, but right now, I'd be cheating another part of my life to make it happen.

From Ian's unnervingly vivid description, the slaw dogs would probably get me tagged as a terrorist transporting hazardous materials - and this at the Knoxville airport, where last year I lost my CA driver's license and tried to get on a plane without it. Rest assured I'll bring back photographs and will conduct a proper, scientific comparison. Clearly, at the Trout Underground, we leave no stone ... more unturned in the process of enhancing your quality fly fishing experience...

An addendum, you just need a group of trusted moderators to keep things in line, kinda like the Clarks board. I think that board runs pretty well! Dale

Hi Tom, me again. I've communicated with you on the boo board. Thanks for your insights on Bamboo in the past. You do a great job here and elsewhere. Though you have not been kind to my wallet... Ask Jim Reams what I mean. I know of one other BB related to NCal FF, and it is unruly. I know you know what I mean. I think that the moderation there is a bit lax. It could be better, but due to the frequent ... more lack of manners, I refuse to participate. I notice you post there from time to time, mainly as a public service. There is another BB forum, hosted by Fly Fisherman magazine, which I'm sure you are also aware of, which is much more reasonable. Very courteous. But it seems to be more SoCal related. OK, you ask where I am headed... I think there is room for a decent NCal forum. Westfly was promising, until recently. I wish I had voiced some concern when Scott Richmond jettisoned Ncal in favor of destinations more north. But I just sat back to see what would happen. I for one would love to participate in a forum with others in a friendly, non-combative atmosphere, mainly devoted to Northern California FF. I know of no other website that would be as suited for this endeavor. I know you are busy, Tom. I don't mean to put pressure on you!! But I can tell your passion is fly fishing! Dale

Wow, falling behind here. Dale: I'm passing on the BB for now. My time - like everyone's - is limited, and to be honest, most of the BBs I've visited turn into mosh pits, where the biggest and loudest rule. This format allows for a lot of expression, but I won't have to suffer through those inane "what's your favorite indicator" type of threads.. Tree: Glad to have you here. If you fished here for ... more a week last year, then you probably hit it pretty good. Let us know when you're planning to make it back this year. As for Tennessee, my rod-selection angst continues, but that will be fodder for another post. I'm going alone (the LT Nancy is way too smart to get involved) and it's always good to go fishing alone. You get up when you want, fish where you want, eat what you want (slaw dogs here I come) and don't have to endure whining rod builders who snore too much.

Very nice site. Are you taking anyone with you on your trip to Tennessee or going solo? Do you plan on taking all bamboo rods, or are you fishing synthethics as well? Can you tell us your aresenal of rods? Any special patterns that you use back there? Sorry for all the questions. Just sign me Curious in California

Tom, you have a nice site. Been lurking here for the last several months. Now I'm not anonymous. Keep up the good work. Consider starting a forum/BB??? Dale

Welcome Brian! I'm testing a couple cool new cane rods right now, and you should expect to hear more about them after my trip to Tennessee. One is Raine's and the other is a Thramer, and neither is boring.

Dave, you know I have the power to edit your posts, which could provide the rest of us with a great deal of entertainment. In other words, be careful what you ask for...

I just signed up as a member to your site, which for some reason brings to mind the quote by Groucho Marx, "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member." Anyway, here I am. Entertain me. And don't forget, you made me sign up if I wanted to comment. So you've no-one to blame but yourself... - Dave
