17 Real Photos(12 RPPC) Marion Steam Shovel Construction Mining of Gunnison Tunnel in Colorado 1901-1909 It is very rare to find a group of antique sepia-toned photographs that are this interesting and historically significant! These 17 postcard sized photos were taken during the construction of one of the many canals that were part of the Gunnison Tunnel Construction Project formally known as“The Uncompahgre Project” The project plan provided for diversion of water from the Gunnison River by the Gunnison Diversion Dam through the Gunnison Tunnel and the South Canal to the Uncompahgre River. To distribute water from the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers. The South and West Canals were constructed and the larger existing private canals, that removed water directly from the Uncompahgre River, were purchased, enlarged and extended. I have no idea ... morewhich part of this enormous canal and tunnel project is documented by these wonderful photographs. Perhaps someone in the audience reading this knows. Or can identify, the exact location of these photographs. Included are 12 Real Photo Postcards and 5 postcard-sized photographs. One of the postcards is commercially manufactured and published by Johnson& Wright of Montrose. Colorado. It is the colored photo entitled“Shift leaving Heading. Gunnison Tunnel” The remainder of the postcards are not commercial but are produced by the owner of the camera. This type of real photo postcard was very popular after the turn of the last century. Around 1906 an affordable folding pocket Kodak camera became available that allowed the mass public to take black& white photographs and have them printed directly onto paper with postcard backs. I assume that the majority of these photos(excepting the commercially made one) were taken by the same photographer. Presumably one of the workers on the construction team.
