Clean, and accurate EICO model 628 tube tester with the attractive brushed aluminum ... morepanel from my collection. The EICO 628 was the successor to the very popular model 625. With sockets added to test the newer tubes that were becoming available. In addition to the usual octal, loctal, 7& 9-pin miniature sockets, Eico added 5& 7-pin nuvistor sockets, novar and compactron sockets, plus 7& 9-pin pin straighteners. The 9-pin socket is actually a combination 9& 10-pin miniature socket. The 628 also has a vastly improved roll chart. The old 4. 5, 6& 7-pin sockets are gone to make room for the new ones. But the older tubes can still be tested. In fact, the data is still on the roll chart and in the tube data manual(included) All it takes is a simple adapter you can make for yourself from an old 8-pin tube base and the socket of your choice. The EICO series of test instruments were intended for professional use. And were marketed mostly to radio and TV repairmen through the local electronic parts dealerships, and their construction shows it. The professional looking brushed aluminum panel was designed to inspire confidence in the customer who saw it, and the heavy steel case of this instrument was intended to protect it well. The circuit was licensed from Triplett and is the same as the Triplett 3413. Heath and Knight also licensed the circuit and produced it as the Heathkit models TC-x and IT-xx. Knight testers are known as the KG-600 series. The test data for all of these tube testers is generally interchangeable. As can be seen from the tag on power cord and the"Tested" stamp on the inside of the case, this is a factory wired instrument- perhaps important if you want to be sure it was done correctly. Eico didn't provide any calibration adjustments for this model tester. Relying instead on the inherent accuracy achieved by the use of close tolerance components in the measuring circuits. I tested a 6F5 tube that I had laying around and saw the tube filaments light up. T he test button did nothing until I turned the line adjust up and noticed th e mete r's needle climb up but never got past the" R eplace" section. I have some knowledge of how to test tubes but I am not an exp ert. Therefore. The tester is being auctioned" As-Is" I t looks to be all complete except for a screw missing under the" Range" knob. The paper roll sights are a little opaque but did come a little clearer when I wiped them. The paper roll does move but it's a little wrinkled as if it getting caught but it's not torn. Up for auction is a vintage Eico Model 625 tube tester. The serial number is 68782W. I recently purchased a number of vintage tube related items from an estate and this tester came from that group. The tester was plugged in and it lights up. But I don't know how to test it properly. The roll chart scrolls smoothly and the cabinet is in good shape, but needs a cleaning. This is my father's beloved Eico Model 625 Eico Tube Tester. Has the 4, 5, 6, and 7-pin sockets, the Octal/Loctal, 7-Pin and 9-Pin Miniature sockets. It has Shunt, Line Adjustment, Filament, Selector, with a few other swithes. The center scroll moves freely and guessing it is original as it is somewhat discolored. The light behind the scroll lights up. I was too afraid to plug in a tube, afraid I would blow up something either on the machine or the tube itself. It does not have the original instruction manual. The front is a vibrant blue with grey edges and the case is military green. History: My father was in the US Air Force and was a radio operator. He retired and they hired him as a civilian associate. For as long as I can remember. My father collected radios and restored them. He worked on Radios, TVs and HAM radios for anyone who ... moreasked him. It was his hobby and he enjoyed it up until a few years ago when he became ill. We are now auctioning the radios, testers and components to assist offsetting the loss of his income for my mother. Vintage Eico Vacuum Tube Tester Model 625 Electronic Test equipment
This tester seems to work ok. Occasionally I would have to flip or rotate the switches a couple of times to get it to work. The more I used it. The better it seemed to work. I'm not for sure but it would seem that maybe some of the contacts need cleaned, maybe blown out? Also the needle seems to jump or jitter around while testing, I don't know if this is normal. The face plate is in pretty good condition with some minor dings and scuffs. The outer housing is missing a lot of the finish and has some minor surface rust. I'm not sure if the two light bulbs on the lower corners are working. They had never came on when I tested a few tubes. It looks like the power cord may have been replaced. The information/data scroll has one small spot that had been tore and taped back together(see picture) My knowledge of things of this nature ... moreare minimal. Tube emission is indicated on a large meter and a neon bulb shows shorts in tubes. I purchased this tester several years ago at Hamfest. The internal wiring was in poor condition due to age and poor wiring practice by the original assembler. I replaced most of the original wires with new vinyl insulated wiring and added a terminal board to better organize the wiring and on which to secure the several resistors. Also improved the bearing arrangement of the chart rollers for smoother action. Refurbished tester has been tested with several tubes from an early short wave receiver and it appears to function as designed. Everything is complete except for the rubber ring that protects the power cord. I did retape the paper to the rollers and that works fine, now. The case has rust, scrapes, and scratches. Read out screen is clear of scratches and crack free. Measures 10" x 12 1/2" x 4 1/2" In good shape for its age and in working condition. A very early and quite popular emission tester from Eico was the Model 625. While it is a basic emission tester. The Model 625 is very compact and easy to use. The Model 625 is also one of the few(only? Eico tube testers I know of that has a vacuum tube under the panel. A 6H6 rectifies one of the AC filament voltage for the neon bulb used in the'Shorts' test. Model 625 was'updated to accommodate newer tubes developed during the 1950's, and was christened the Model 628. Still a simple emission tester. Comes with the catalog of numbers for testing various tubes. Y ou may be able to spot the control labeled'Grid' in the lower left corner on the picture shown above. This sets the grid bias on the tube. And ranges from-5VDC all the way up to-45VDC. Under the hood, there are no tubes to worry about in these testers. The'solid state' bias supply is furnished via the single diode. See the picture of the'guts' of the Model 666. Highlighted in yellow is the filtered DC supply(for the transistor test) on the right and the adjustment for leakage indication on the left. You can set how'high' a leakage exists between elements of the tubes that would be'failed' on the leakage test. Looking at the'guts' of any tube tester is the best indicator of whether or not you have a simple emission tester. This comes only with the items shown in pictures. I believe all parts are there but they may not be. Comes with the original Manual and an additional roll chart. The first top section of the chart is pretty fragile and holey though. Also comes with a folder with the tube chart supplements for model 625–07. Out of a SCRANTON PENNSYLVANIA ESTATE is this VINTAGE EICO Model 625 VACUUM TUBE TESTER(measuring 12.5" x 10" x 4" Serial number 26953) It did light up when I plugged it in[SEE THIRD PHOTO] I don't know if it still tests tubes accurately as I have no knowledge of this electronic area. Nice eBay find for the collector or avid restoration enthusiast. An EICO model 625 vintage tube tester complete with schematic. Parts list, tube data including the May 1956"NEW TUBE TESTER DATA" Roll chart is inside- well lit. Hesitates occasionally when scrolled up/down but I was able to go from"STOP" up to"STOP" down. Included also are 11" x 17" prints of tube data. I tested a 45 tube. As shown in the pictures. Simple settings on the meter, just follow the lever number"UP" or"DOWN" One cap/cover missing on the last lever. See photos. No other problems noticed. This is from a silent key who used it very little and it shows as there is very minimal wear(if any) and all of the sockets are very tight. It was not used in a shop for daily use and the outside case has usual shelf wear. These are the ones you want to find! It comes with all factory papers, instruction manual, supplementary tube data, 9 pin tube extension adapter and update lists for tubes as of about 1968. The internal roll tube chart is also very nice. It is a trans-conductance tester and will make a very good tester for you in knowing what condition your tubes are in. It is from an estate and is in very good clean condition with some normal light wear and scratches but overall clean and nice. The top of the plastic switch tip on the MERIT switch was evidently broken and it has had black tape wrapped around it(see photo) This is the black plastic switch tip only(not the actual metal switch) It is very minor and could be easily replaced but works fine just the way it is and will continue to do so(it's hardly noticeable) All other buttons and switch tips are intact and in good shape. Meter is clear and nice. Power cord is also nice with no deterioration. Built-in tube chart roll is intact and in good shape. This is a very nice tester in very nice shape.
