Wonderful american primitive- WOODEN BALLOT BOX Great slotted design& detail- original heavy cast hardware handles on two sides. I believe this to be cherry or walnut. I bought this ballot box about fifteen years ago at an anitque show in Springfield. MA. I purchased it from a dealer who was from Norwich. CT. He noted he had two of these boxes at once, only this one remained available. He stated it came from NE Connecticut, possibly from Thompson or Putnam, CT I was using this as a box to store CD's and music in. Downsizing and parting with a number of accessories. Time for this one to find a new home. I was collecting ballot boxes& voting related items for a while. I've never come across another ballot box like this- or seen one since I bought this piece. I recently got a large box-lot of old. Paper ephemera, brochures, advertisement, matchbooks, and the like, that I will be listing on ebay. There are some really interesting vintage items and lots of memory-lane material included. It is just plain fun reading through this lot! OREGON November 8. 1938 It measures a big 14" by 20" It is one page of pink-tone paper that has been printed on one side only and that has been stored folded in quarters. Things to vote on include: filling a seat that is ... morevacant in the US Senate till Jan 3. 1939-and then electing a new US Senator to be seated in Jan 39. Other offices to be filled include: Governor. US Congress; State Senators; Sec of State; lots of judges; only one man is running for'constable' Then there are issue of'legislation referred to the people" regarding such things as requiring medical exams to obtain marriage license; limiting pay for legislatures. Changing the liability of stock holders in bank. Also there are'Referendums Ordered by Petition" regarding slot machines and gambling. And there are"Proposed by Initiative Petitions" asking for the state to promote following the Townsend Plan for old age pensions; a special tax to aid the aged poor; regulating picketing and boycotts by labor groups; proposals for water purification; regulating sale of alcoholic beverages; legalizing certain lotteries. plus other stuff I probably missed CONDITION: It is unused. Antique MARQETRY & CANNON BALLOT BOX, Americana / Folk Art
Free Shipping. Within the Continential United States A WONDERFUL PIECE OF 19th CENTURY FOLK ART MARQUETRY and IRON CANNON"BALLOT BOX" This piece is somewhat baffling to us and frankly. We do not know how to represent it definitively. We have consulted with a few people that agree that it is folk art and was hand crafted in the mid to late 19th century. The cannon looks to have been adapted to the box. Some wonder which came first; the box or cannon. The majority agree that the box was made to accomodate the cannon. In any event the piece is indeed unique and servicable. There are some that say there are military, masonic, and nautical nuances, incorporated in the box. It is also thought to be of the civil war period, if not an actual piece made, in the field, to adapt to the needs of a military fraternity. It appears that the cannon ... morewas an original working toy cannon. Not being skilled in such appraisals; I will defer to you, the knowledgable bidders, to judge this remarkable piece of americana. The consensus of it's value is considerably over double our asking bid. You bid your pleasure. With the cannon mounted on the box. A ballot ball is deposited into the barrel of the cannon, where it rolls down into the box, ringing a bell to confirm a ballot has been cast. There are two drawers; one for the cast ballots and the other for unused ballot balls. The cannon appears to have a bronze barrel and iron truck. It is held in place. On the box, by 2 small pins in the wheels and one large brass pin in the truck tail. The marquetry box is very sturdy. Made with a beautiful array of exotic wood pieces. I have in auction this original old ballot box.I was told from Litchfield,Ct.it measures 24"wide 14"deep and 14-1/2"high.It has original red paint and it,the box is mitred not dovetailed,I believe later part 19th centurty early 20th.Hinges are brass maybe not original.The box needs restoration as top is split and bottom has open crack.The trim on left side needs replacing.It is and should be restoreable to complement any New England home,museum ect.Please ask any questions.

This auction is for a vintage Pre Civil War July 28. 1848 dated North American and United States Gazette newspaper from Philadelphia. This is a one sheet paper front and back. It has a few articles on the front page such as, Mexican News, and a Remarkable Negro Character, and then on the other side is a Whig nomination ticket for Zachary Taylor as president and Millard Fillmore as Vice President. Very hard to find, antique wooden voting, or ballot, box. Stamped on the back, Property Town of Milo. Milo is a town in Yates County. NY. Settlement began around 1788 by members of the Universal Friends, a religious sect. In 1818, the town was founded from part of the Town of Benton, while still part of Ontario County. By 1820, the population was about 1,612. When Yates county was formed in 1823, Milo became part of the new county. Not sure of the exact age of the box but I did a little research and found that New York became the first American State to adopt the paper ballot for state wide elecions in 1889. Unable ... moreto verify the dates when the voting box went out of use but most sources say the early part of the 1900's. There is a piece of type on the front of the box with writing that says Milo 3 so appears it was at one time used in the 3rd voting district of Milo. NY. If you live in. Or near, this area it is a wonderful addition to a collection of local history. The box measures 7 1/2 inches high and is 10 1/4 inches front to back and 18 1/2 inches side to side. At one time there was a key lock but that is missing. It now has a metal clasp on which you could place a lock which has been part of the box for a very long time. There is no lock included with the box. It is in good to very good condition. No major problems with the box. It is strong and solid with dovetailed construction. There is some wear to the slot on the top of the box through which the ballots were placed. Looks like a bit of mice chewing in that area. Otherwise very good. Here is an original newspaper. The Portland Daily Press dated Monday, August 14, 1876, which has 2 pages(4 sides) and measures approx. 20 3/4" by 29" when closed. On the front pages is a ballot for Rutherford B. Hayes& William Wheeler with a list of Electors and State Office candidates. On page 2 is a bit of news on General Custer and all of his men being killed and on page 3 is an advertisement for a Blaine Rally. An unaddressed 1 cent Jefferson Postal. Scott#UX27, with a 1924 California ballot issue printed on the back: DEAR FRIEND: Because the passage of the Water and Power Act, the 500 million dollar bond issue(No. 16 on the ballot Nov 4) would seriously affect my interests, I ask you to vote against it. It is the same radical and dangerous measure that was beaten nearly three to one in 1922. It has nothing to do with Boulder Dam or the Colorado River and would seriously delay that project. Boulder Dam was constructed from 1931 to 1935. Over 175 Chambers of Commerce and similar organizations have passed resolutions strongly condemning it. VOTE NO ON No. 16 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4th.
