PAT 1839 DEWALT & SCHRADERS MYSTERY ANTIQUE GRINDER
Offered for sale is an almost complete mystery. Although it is a grinder of some sort. It was made by Dewalt& Schaders of Reading, Pennsylvania and is patented 1839. The box is wooden and handmade. It has a hand forged locking mechanism on the front, handle, hinges and chopper blades. There is a spindle inside which fits into a groove and which has numerous cutting blades(although a bit rusty, still sharp) The spindle turns freely and can be removed, presumably for cleaning. On the top of the box is a square hole through which the grinding medium is fed. The box has blades attached on the inside which fit into the blades on the spindle. The wood of the box is unknown, but has aged a deep brown color over the course of almost 200 years. The box sits on rail legs and is very sturdy. There has been use to the box and the top has scuffs(as ... moreshown) There do not appear to be any blades missing. The blades are not uniform, some larger and some smaller and are not spaced evenly. Supposedly this gave some advantage to the grinding process(see photos) There are small cracks on the spindle(as shown) though they have not loosened the blades. The turning handle is missing the wooden or glass knob. The box is 12-3/4" wide X 10-1/4" across X 9-1/4" high. Please note that this item is heavy. It will require extra postage for shipment.
