Antique Central Scientific Electrical Resistance Test Box Equipment
This is a Central Scientific Company"Resistance Box" made in Chicago. Illinois. I'm guessing it was made in the 1930's or 1940's. The Humbolt University Instrument website has the following- Designed especially for use in elementary work. This box would be used as a standard resistance in laboratory work in schools. Resistance values are adjusted by removing the brass pegs. The box is constructed with the pegs in parallel with precision bifilar wound resistance coils. With the peg in place the current flows through the peg. When removed the current flows through the resistor. This box was used to alter the resistance in an electrical circuit by shifting the position of the brass pegs. Thereby combining brass blocks in the circuit. From what I understand. With all pegs in place, the circuit would have a resistance of ... more0, as all shunts are in place. And for example. To get 42 ohms, you remove the pegs from the 40 and 2 ohm holes. All the coils inside the wood box are in place. With nothing obviously wrong with them. The"pegs" mentioned in the article above. Were not with the unit when I acquired it, but some could be made easily with a piece of 1/4" brass round stock. I believe the wood box is made from mahogany. With a bakelite top, and brass bars that the pegs would go into. The wood is in great shape. But the finish is showing it's age. The bakelite top is in good shape with no chips or cracks. The peg holes are labeled for resistance on the lower bar at.1. 2, 3, 4, 1.0, 2.0 Ohms The top bar is labeled at 3.0. 4.0, 10, 20, 30, 40.
