Antique Chinese Porcelain Buddha - DAMAGED
Featured here is a truly exquisite antique Chinese porcelain Buddha that has been tragically damaged(a victim of the Northridge earthquake in California) and repaired to the best of his ability by its owner at the time. The figure is small- just 3 3/4" tall. But dazzlingly modeled. It was originally purchased in China around the turn of the last century by American family members of the previous owner, and has been dated to the mid-19th century. There is a maker's mark on the back just above the(torn) paper sticker that appears to say"Kung" or Kuang" at its top(the ink is VERY faint and nearly illegible) another few indecipherable letters below that- and then a series of numbers(perhaps dates or inventory numbers) which are also virtually illegible. Kuang Hsu(1875-1909) was the last emperor of the Ming dynasty- and ... morealthough the appraiser's estimate of age(as above) and the writing on the paper tag MAY be in temporal alignment, I make no firm assertion. The maker's mark is embossed in the porcelain and is extremely faint, but there are two pictographs that can be detected in very bright light, one above the other, in an approximately leaf or shield shaped indentation from stamping when still moist. It is fully understood that the damage to this lovely piece is so extensive that its value has been severely impacted- I have listed it not in expectation of making a substantial sale. But rather to assure that it continues to be seen by people who appreciate such beauty, and in hope that it may be restored by someone with the appropriate passion and skill- it would be a crime for such exquisite craft to be thrown on the ash-heap of history, and never seen again. The front of the casing is cracked open from the back at the bottom left corner(see photos- looks like it's been dropped) The damage is more than just superficial. When powered on. The display is corrupted(see photos) and it turns itself off again after a few seconds. I removed the bezel to inspect the damage. The top and sides are in good condition. Apart from some surface scratches, particularly in the centre of the front rim of the lid. There is an old crack along the length of the base. As shown. Up for auction: Rogers Yale pattern serving fork 8 7/8" long some scratching on the back of the 2 outer tines. There is some plate loss. But it looks more like not coated well rather than loss from wear. This in on the front of the fork& handle and the back rest area. The serving spoon is 8 5/8" long, this has no plate loss. This is flattened on the bottom with damage like someone used it for a hammer, the marks are also seen from the front side. Still all in all they are to pretty scrap and would make a nice spare set. e Japanese sword polishing, mounting project, damaged "Tadayoshi"
This is a Japanese sword in project condition. The blade is signed"Hizen koku Tadayoshi 肥前国忠吉" shinogi- zukuri shape. Edo period ca.1800 era made blade. The blade is out of polish, shows big bend at the 8 inch from the tip(see in last photo) forging flaw in the temper(see in#11 photo) in polishing project condition. The temper line is chu-suguba temper pattern throughout the blade and has komaru temper at the point. It is rested in army mount saya only and no tsuba. No handle and no other fittings. It measures 28" cutting edge, 1+1/4" width, 6.5mm thickness at the notch. Shipping is $20 priority in U.S. Payment due within 3 days auction end.
